South Lake Tahoe receives state grant to help homeless population

The city of South Lake Tahoe is among the first round of recipients for Gov. Gavin Newsom’s Homekey Project, California’s $600 million program allowing local jurisdictions to buy existing hotels, motels and apartments and convert them into long term housing for the homeless. South Lake Tahoe received $9,576,000 to purchase and renovate four existing lodges that will provide a total of 82 housing units for the homeless. While South Lake Tahoe may have a relatively small homeless population, at approximately 110 people, compared to some of the other recipients such as San Jose, and Contra Costa County, they do have the added challenge of the cold winters that can make homelessness a deadly problem.
