South MS restaurants fail their health inspections, with a wide variety of issues cited

Six kitchens in South Mississippi failed their restaurant inspection in the first 10 days this year.

Cited for critical violations are:

Boho Biloxi Social House Wine & Cheese, 871 Howard Ave., Biloxi, was inspected Jan. 8 for a permit renewal. It had seven critical violations, five of which were corrected during the inspection.

It was cited for:

No certified manager

No person in charge present who demonstrates knowledge and performs duty

Corrected were:

Food in good condition, safe and unadulterated

Food separated and protected

Food contact surface cleaned and sanitized

Proper date marking and disposition

Toxic substance properly identified, stored, used

A follow-up inspection the same day showed the violations were corrected and the restaurant scored a B.

This was the first C dating back to 2021.

Thorny Oyster and Cosmic Cafe, both at The Pearl hotel at 104 North Beach Blvd., Bay St. Louis had corrective follow-up inspections Jan. 4. Both were cited for not having their last grade and inspection report posted.

A second follow-up inspection was held the next day on Jan. 5. The violation was corrected and both were given a B.

This was the fourth C since 2023 for Thorny Oyster and the second for Cosmic Cafe.

Gulf Regional Livestock Cafe at 157 Rocky Creek Road in Lucedale was inspected Jan. 10 for a permit renewal. It was cited for:

Food contact surface not cleaned and sanitized

Sewage waste water not properly disposed

Corrected during the inspection was Insects, rodents of animals not present.

This is the fourth C since 2021.

Nexgen Investments, 2008 Highway 11 S, Picayune, had an initial inspection for the Shell station on Jan. 4. It was graded a C and cited for:

No certified manager

Food contact surface not cleaned and sanitized

Subway at 1701-1 Mississippi 43 North in Picayune had an inspection Jan. 10 for a permit renewal. It was cited for not having a certified manager. This is the only C dating back to 2012.

Restaurants and other food service establishments in Mississippi are rated “A” if they pass the health department inspection, “B” if violations are corrected during the inspection and “C” if the violations are critical.

Most restaurants inspected since Jan. 1 in South Mississippi had no violations, with 84 kitchens scoring an A and 18 a B.
