South Plainfield goes out to bid for fireworks celebration

Plainfield has canceled July 4 fireworks at Cedar Brook Park. Edison's fireworks will go on at 9:30 p.m.

SOUTH PLAINFIELD – Memorial Day, the unofficial kickoff to summer, is still a ways away, but the borough is already planning for its Labor Day fireworks celebration.

The borough has set a 9 a.m. April 19 deadline to receive proposals for its Labor Day fireworks display. The fireworks traditionally cap off a day of activities which start with the annual South Plainfield Labor Day Parade, organized by the South Plainfield Public Celebrations Committee.

This year will be the 64th year of the parade. A fireworks display of at least 20 minutes will take place on Labor Day, Sept. 4, at the onset of darkness, according to borough documents.

Bidders must provide an itemized list of each shell size and type with a description of the effects. The borough is looking to have 241 opening shells, 1,093 total body aerial display shells and nearly 500 total ground finale presentation shells, the documents say.

Companies will be required to provide information about whether cancelation, setup and postponement fees are included and the amount. They also will be required to clean up the launch site after the fireworks performance and inspect for leftover shells once it is light out.

A contract with the borough will be required to be filed no later than 30 days before the event, along with a fire permit outlining the display of fireworks, a list of the fireworks to be used including the shell size, a certificate of insurance and rain dates and other requirements.

Last year's Labor Day festivities were disrupted when a group of white supremacists, who were not registered to participate, crashed the Labor Day parade, the first in four years following cancellations from storms and the COVID-19 pandemic.
