South Plainfield nursing home resident, 81, charged in death of 91-year-old woman

SOUTH PLAINFIELD - An 81-year-old nursing home resident has been charged with reckless manslaughter in connection with assaulting another elderly resident, 91, who died from her injuries.

Angel Bermontiz, 81, of Piscataway was charged Thursday with one count of reckless manslaughter, Middlesex County Prosecutor Yolanda Ciccone announced.

Around 3:40 p.m. Jan. 16, police received a 911 call about a combative patient at the AristaCare at Cedar Oaks nursing home and rehabilitation center on Durham Avenue.

When police arrived, they found Bermontiz had been restrained in his bed by staff members, according to the prosecutor.

Police were told that Bermowitz had just assaulted Clara Sutowski, 91, of South Plainfield, another nursing home resident.

Sutowski was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick where she later died, according to the prosecutor's office.

An investigation by South Plainfield Detective Thomas Rutter and Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office Detective Jose Rosario determined Bermontiz allegedly slapped Sutowski. causing her to fall and hit her head on the floor, the prosecutor's office said.
