Area college roundup: Harrison, Mackenzie score 28 apiece in LCU win over Cameron

Rowan Mackenzie and Russell Harrison poured in 28 points apiece Friday night, leading Lubbock Christian University to an 85-61 victory against Cameron in Lone Star Conference basketball at the Rip Griffin Center.

Mackenzie shot 9 of 12 from the field, including 4 of 7 from 3-point range. Harrison was 9 for 20, including 7 of 15 from 3-point range. The Chaps made 16 3s as a team, getting three from Aaron Gonzales, who finished with 11 points. Harrison and Mackenzie also had eight and seven rebounds, respectively.

The game was the first of two this weekend for LCU (8-3, 4-1). The Chaps host Midwestern State (5-7, 2-4) at 3 p.m. Sunday.

The Chaps got eight points and six rebounds from Kurt Wegscheider and five points and a season-high nine assists from Najeeb Muhammad. Muhammad had eight assists each in two of the previous three games.

DeSean Munson scored 14 points for Cameron (2-10, 0-6), and Colt Savage was next with 13. The Aggies lost their eighth game in a row. Cameron stunned LCU in the second round of conference play last season, upsetting the Chaps when the two teams came in with records of 3-14 and 22-1, respectively.

Lubbock Christian University ran its Division II-record home win streak to 110 games, cruising past Cameron as Rachel Haase's 14 points led five double-digit scorers for the Lady Chaps.

Grace Foster scored 12 points for LCU (9-4, 4-1). Maci Maddox and Audrey Robertson added 11 points apiece and Shaylee Stovall chipped in 10.

The Lady Chaps, with nine points from Foster and eight from Robertson, led 34-6 after the first quarter. The 34-point quarter was a program record. The NCAA began using quarters in women's basketball during the 2015-16 season. No LCU players wound up playing more than 23 minutes.

Kiara Lovings led Cameron (6-6, 3-3) with 10 points.

LCU hosts Midwestern State at 1 p.m. Sunday. MSU's leading scorer is Tahoka graduate Natalie Stice, who averages 12.6 points per game.

The Lady Chaps' last home loss was on New Year's Day 2015, and their last conference home loss was on Jan. 10, 2013, both against Oklahoma City University.

MESA, Ariz. — Ismail Habib had 19 points and 10 assists, leading No. 14 South Plains College past Seward County (Kan.) Community College 100-63 Thursday night in the Texans' last game of the Fiesta Bowl Shootout men's basketball tournament.

Five players scored in double digits for South Plains (12-2), which won for the 10th time in 11 games. Now the Texans are off until Jan. 9, when they face New Mexico Military Institute in their Western Junior College Athletic Conference opener.

Christian Coleman had 16 points, and Elijah Tate delivered 14 points and six rebounds. The Texans, who shot 55 percent from the field, got 10 points apiece from Malek Abdelgoward and Jalen McDonald.

Niko Smith scored 16 points for Seward County (8-7). Daeyon James and Nathan Jones added 12 apiece.
