South Puget Sound Community College on course to offer 2nd bachelor’s degree in the fall
South Puget Sound Community College is taking steps toward offering a second undergraduate degree, the college announced.
The second offering, which still needs to be approved by an accrediting body, is a bachelor of science degree in computer science. The college already offers a bachelor’s degree in applied science.
The BS in CS program is designed for students who have completed an approved associate-level degree from SPSCC or another accredited institution, according to the college. It will be offered in an evening and weekend format that can be completed in two years. Students will have the option to start the degree program in fall or winter quarters.
The computer science bachelor’s program is expected to launch with an inaugural cohort of 25 to 30 students in fall 2024, pending approval from the Northwest Commission on College and Universities, according to SPSCC.
Why computer science? Demand for the subject from students and employers, said Kelly Green, the college’s vice president of advancement. State government is among the employers where there is a need for cybersecurity professionals.
“The need is so high,” Green said, adding that there are not enough computer science graduates in the area to meet local demand for the high-paying jobs.
The college also intends to streamline the computer science requirements. There was a time when calculus and physics were required courses to obtain a computer science degree, but after a recent visioning event with employers and students, they say that computer science learning has changed and that the two subjects are no longer needed.
That should make the program more accessible, Green added.
“The bachelor of science degree will prepare students for employment across Washington state and beyond, covering more content and with more depth than a two-year degree can provide,” said Michael Haensel, SPSCC professor of computer information systems and computer science, in a statement.
SPSCC developed its curriculum in coordination with Grays Harbor College, a community college in Aberdeen. Grays Harbor College students will be able to complete their BS in CS through SPSCC once they complete an approved associate degree at GHC, according to the college.
The bachelor’s degree in applied science is tied to the college’s craft beverage program.
