Could new Michaels and La-Z-Boy stores be coming to Churn Creek MarketPlace in south Redding?

On Wednesday, the city’s Board of Administrative Review will consider amending the use permit for the shopping center at South Bonnyview and Churn Creek roads east of Interstate 5, a change that could pave the way for adding the retailers.

California Gold Development Corp, which built the center that opened in late 2018, wants to allow for an additional 5,386 square feet of building area and to change the original use of certain building sites.

The proposed changes would include a 10,000-square-foot La-Z-Boy Furniture store in place of a 5,100-square-foot restaurant at the northwest corner of the shopping center near Les Schwab Tire Center and SasqWash Car Wash, according to a staff report.

A 15,800-square-foot Michaels would replace a 14,800-square-foot retail building just east of La-Z-Boy.

Other changes would include a 9,500-square-foot discount retail store in place of a 5,760-square-foot retail building and a fast-food restaurant with a drive-thru would replace a 3,000-square-foot retail building.

The staff report does not identify the fast-food restaurant.

Wednesday’s meeting starts at 2 p.m. in the River Conference Room at Redding City Hall.

Both La-Z-Boy Furniture Galleries and Michaels already operate stores in Redding, on Athens Avenue and Hilltop Drive, respectively.

So, would these be second locations, or would the retailers move to the new locations in south Redding?

Angel Ochoa, who manages La-Z-Boy’s Sacramento-Chico-Redding region, declined to comment about Wednesday’s meeting and the potential for the furniture store to open in Churn Creek MarketPlace.

Michaels did not immediately reply to an email seeking comment.
