South Rowan buries Ledford

May 28—WALLBURG — South Rowan stayed busy on the base paths Thursday.

Sending at least nine batters to the plate in three of the five innings, the Raiders clouted 12 hits, took advantage of three Ledford errors and crushed the Panthers 14-3 in a Central Carolina Conference game stopped by the 10-run mercy rule at Gary Hinkle Field.

The victory lifted South to 6-3, 6-2 in the league and into a third-place tie with Ledford, now 8-2, 6-2. South and Ledford trail North Davidson (9-0) and Oak Grove (8-1).

South led 9-1 after two innings and put the game away with five in the fifth.

Already trailing by three, Ledford got on the board when Gavin Sentell scored on Bailey Smith's infield hit.

The Panthers's biggest highlight of the evening came in the fourth when Brant Mickey launched a homer to center with Lucas Glover on base.

Seven of the Raiders runs were charged to Smith, who started, and the other seven were at the expense of Glover.

Ledford managed just four hits off South starter Haden Leffew, who pitched the first four innings. Luke Hiskey tossed a perfect fifth.

South's first three batters scored in the first and the Panthers never recovered.
