South Shore cocoa crawl: Here's where to snag a cup of steaming hot chocolate

We're in the coldest part of winter in Massachusetts and the frigid temperatures this month have been downright brutal on the South Shore.

Looking to beat those cold-weather blues? A steaming cup of hot cocoa may just do the trick. From local coffee shops to desert-centric restaurants, here are places on the South Shore to grab a mug.

Coffee Break Cafe, Quincy

Coffee Break Cafe has locations in Quincy, Milton and Boston with hot chocolate on tap in a variety of flavors. It also offers vegan hot chocolate.

Arianna Alberti, who works at the Quincy Point location, said customers have been flocking to the store for hot chocolate.

"I've made so many of them this winter," she said.

Crave, Hull

Crave owner Casey Mahoney opened her shop in the middle of the pandemic in October 2020. Despite the tough circumstances, she said things have been going well.

"I've always wanted to do something like this, and I saw an opportunity," Mahoney said.

The store added hot chocolate as a winter treat – the rest of the menu focuses on healthy smoothies and bowls. The store also sells "hot chocolate bombs." The bomb is a chocolate ball with marshmallows inside that you put inside a cup of hot milk to make your own hot chocolate.

Donut King, Weymouth

Donut King is an old-school coffee and donut shop in Weymouth. During the pandemic, the store went all-in on creative breakfast treats, including a hot chocolate donut with marshmallows on top.

You can also add marshmallows and candy cane bits to the top of Donut King's hot chocolate to really sweeten the drink.

Décolleté Juicery, Randolph

This brand new spot in Randolph opened up last September. Owner Ashley Lubin said hot chocolate was added to the menu to attract business in the cold- winter months.

"It's a good addition for the winter," she said.

Fratelli's, Quincy

This classic Quincy bakery serves hot chocolate along with a plethora of pastries to satisfy anyone's sweet tooth. It's next door offshoot, Sala by Fratelli's, is a dessert bar that also serves a number of chocolate-inspired drinks, including white chocolate maple steamer. Or, if you're looking for some alcohol to warm you up, a chocolate or peanut butter martini or alcoholic Tiramisu Frappe.

Fratelli's also has locations in Weymouth and Taunton.
