South Shore restaurant scene: 2 new breweries, movings, closings

The restaurant business never rests, and that's especially true along the South Shore.

The local brewery and taproom scene continues to expand with Untold Brewing announcing a third location and a new brewery, 42nd Brew Co., opening in Kingston.

Whether the holiday light extravaganza at The Venetian in Weymouth or the anticipation of rooftop dining overlooking Plymouth's waterfront when the weather turns warm once again, the South Shore's dining scene is never lacking for new and interesting places to try.

Here is some of the latest local restaurant and brew news.

Gather opens in Canton

After six years in Pembroke, Gather, a breakfast and brunch restaurant, has relocated to Canton.
After six years in Pembroke, Gather, a breakfast and brunch restaurant, has relocated to Canton.

Gather grew a local and loyal following in the six years since it opened in Pembroke. Its owners hope to replicate that success now that it has moved its breakfast and brunch business to Canton.

Since closing in Pembroke on Oct. 15, Gather owners and staff were busy getting the new place at 635 Washington St. in Canton ready for its grand opening, which was held Nov. 25-26.

While Gather offers the standard variety of egg dishes and sides, its menu includes stuffed French toast, which is made with cream cheese, cinnamon, brown sugar and sweet potato filling topped with a marshmallow.

There's also the Harvest Brunch Bowl, a meal made of sweet and white potato home fries, sautéed shaved Brussels sprouts, squash, onions and dried cranberries served with an egg.

Eggs benedict comes with a choice of meats and vegetables and a lox spread for sharing.

Daring diners can ask for the "chef's choice" to add an element of surprise to their meal. And if you want it spicy, the restaurant says, "Just ask!"

Blueberry Muffin coming to former Gather site

The former Gather location already appears to have a new tenant.

Some Pembroke residents have noticed a "coming soon" sign outside 35 School St. for the Blueberry Muffin.

The Blueberry Muffin offers far more than its namesake. The restaurant serves a full breakfast menu along with burgers and lunch sandwiches.

Blueberry Muffin's first shop opened in the Cedarville section of Plymouth in 1997. A second restaurant opened in Kingston in 2013 and a third at The Pinehills in 2017.

The Pinehills location recently underwent a renovation.

Untold Brewing plans to ring in the new year with a new location in Plymouth.

The new taproom is easy to spot due to the large industrial and maritime mural covering one side of the building facing toward Court Street/Route 3A in front of the Harborwalk Apartments in North Plymouth.

The company, which is frequently producing new offerings, will also use the Plymouth location as a research and development brewery to concoct new creations on-site.

"Our amazing construction team has been cranking," Untold posted on Facebook. "Without any unforeseen delays, we expect to receive keys in early December and will focus on finetuning guest amenities, decor and, of course, hiring and training the latest members of our growing Untold family."

Untold hopes to open in the 3,300-square-foot space early next year.

"There are still a lot of details to sweat and final licensing approvals to be had, but we’re optimistically eyeing an open in January," the post said. "We have poured a lot of thought into this new Untold home and cannot wait to welcome you in."

The company was founded in 2017 by co-owner Matt Elder and a previous business partner. Current co-owner Mike Dyer joined the company in 2021.

Untold opened its first location in Scituate six years ago. A second one followed in Hingham in 2022. The Plymouth location will mark the third for the company.

42nd Parallel Brew Co. opened its taproom in Kingston over Veterans Day weekend.

A new taproom has opened at 77 Summer St. in Kingston.

Kingston neighbors and company founders Paul Schiele and Matt Ward opened 42nd Parallel Brew Co. (usually shortened to as 42nd Brew Co.) after brewing beer as a hobby so they could enjoy cold ones on long summer days and winter nights around the firepit.  After many neighborhood “sampling” sessions, they realized they might be onto something bigger than just quenching their thirst.   According to the company's website, one of those sessions by the firepit in December 2020 led to the collaboration.

Steve Darby (2TF Marketing) and Nia Tieu (Tieu Media) jumped on board to support marketing and brand strategy to bring their brews to life.

"Unfortunately, we ran into some hurdles when trying to obtain our licenses from the state and federal authorities in September 2022," the website explains.

The giving season: Can you Lend a Hand to your South Shore neighbors in need?

As a result, the company began self-distributing three of its flagship IPAs over the last year − Three Sheets to the Wind, Ship Faced and Shipwrecked − as well as its Down the Hatch pilsner and Cage Titans Lightweight Lager.

"We've learned a lot over the past year self-distributing and decided it was time to find a location to serve pints in our own taproom," the company said.

The taproom is closed Mondays. It is open from 5-10 p.m. Tuesdays and Wednesdays, 5-11 p.m. Thursdays and Fridays, noon to midnight Saturdays and noon to 10 p.m. Sundays.

Terrace Rooftop Dining, which will open at 150 Water St. on the Plymouth waterfront in time for spring, has hired longtime chef Kyle Garell to oversee its menu.

As Terrace Rooftop Dining at 150 Water St. in Plymouth moves closer to completion, its owners have announced the hiring of chef Kyle Garell.

"Chef Kyle is a master of blending traditional flavors with modern flair," the restaurant said in its online announcement.

Garell is a graduate of the New England Culinary Institute. He then found success in Boston for six years, including a stint at The Palm in the Copley Plaza Hotel.

His culinary adventure brought him next to Martha's Vineyard, where he ran the kitchen at the Relais & Châteaux Charlotte Inn for seven years.

He next worked next at The Social House in Manchester, Vermont, where his menus were a reflection of the changing seasons.

"Now, Chef Kyle's voyage has brought him full circle, back to the ocean's edge that inspired his culinary beginnings," the announcement said.

The restaurant sits atop the multitenant, multiuse building across from East Bay Grille and Cabby Shack. The sprawling building includes retail shops and residential units. A dedicated elevator will bring guests directly to the restaurant.

A firm opening date hasn't been announced, although the owners have said the business will be open in time for customers to enjoy dining outdoors by springtime.

Angelo's roast beef closes in Plymouth

Downtown Plymouth's Angelo's Famous Roast Beef & Deli closed this month after seven years in business.

"I tried my best to keep things rolling, but it in the end it was just too hard," Angelo's founder Rich Monsini said in a Facebook post announcing the closing. "Let’s just say inflation (and the) COVID pandemic had a lot to do with it."

Monsini lives in Plymouth and grew up in Brockton, spending 15 years as a construction worker before taking the plunge into the restaurant business. He opened Monsini’s Family Pizzeria in Middleboro in 2014.

The shop closed in 2016, when Monsini, in search of more foot traffic, launched Angelo’s Famous Roast Beef in the hut fronting the Bradford Hotel & Suites at 98 Water St. in Plymouth before relocating to the larger 5 Main St. Extension space in 2016.

In his post, he explained that he built the restaurant during a difficult time when his mother was very sick and nearing the end of her life.

"Yet Mom kept telling me to build. She was so proud," he wrote. "She was born and raised in this great town, and that’s a big part of the reason I always wanted to give back."

In the post, Monsini said his last delivery was to a homeless shelter, where he dropped off 30 free sandwiches.

"I will now leave with my head high," he said.
