South Windsor banner program seeks vets to be honored

Oct. 25—SOUTH WINDSOR — A banner program conceptualized by a middle school student in 2019 is seeking veteran nominees to honor in 2023.

The South Windsor Veterans Banner Program recognizes military veterans in the community by hanging banners recognizing their service in their honor.

The idea came from Mihika Joshi, a current South Windsor High School student.

The first eight banners were put up at the community center in 2020.

Last year, 26 local veterans were nominated and honored.

Now, 48 veterans from Wold War II and the Vietnam and Korean wars have had banners displayed for their service this year.

Each banner includes the veteran's name, image and military branch.

They are printed by a small business located in Florida that's operated by a veteran who only hires other veterans.

The banners are hung from Memorial Day to Veterans Day at Nevers Park, South Windsor Town Hall, South Windsor Community Center or any other suitable location identified by the South Windsor Patriotic Commission.

Those wishing to nominate a veteran to be honored next year should call Herb Asplund at 860-644-0881 or Daria Plummer at 860-432-8403.
