SouthCoast high school scores and highlights from Tuesday, Sept. 20

Here's a look at the scores and highlights from Tuesday's high school action on the SouthCoast.

BOYS CROSS COUNTRY

Old Rochester 20, GNB Voc-Tech 41

Murray Copps paced the Bulldogs to a season-opening win by clocking a first-place time of 16:58 over 3.1 miles at Washburn Park. Tyler Young (second; 17:38), Torsten Brickley (fourth; 18:41), Aidan Silk (sixth; 18:45) and Nolan Bushnell (seventh; 18:55) also contributed for ORR (1-0). For GNB Voc-Tech (0-3, 0-3 SCC), Daniel Ward (18:34), Owen Vieira (18:44), Colin Steussi (21:42) and Will Guillotte (21:44) contributed.

Bishop Feehan 23, Bishop Stang 34

Bishop Stang 15, Cardinal Spellman 50

The Spartans, who were without an injured Andrew Caldera, were led by Andrew Weaver (third; 17:12) and Andrew Fortin (fourth; 17:17) on a modified 2.9 mile course against Bishop Feehan. Jack Lucy (seventh; 17:40), Lowell Copps (eighth; 17:42) and Dalton Baker (12th; 18:37) also contributed. Stang travels to St. Joseph Prep on Sept. 27.

Apponequet 23, Fairhaven 38

Somerset Berkley 25, Fairhaven 36

Apponequet’s Aydan Fournier was first against both Somerset Berkley and Fairhaven. Against the Blue Devils, Nathan Levesque (fourth), Lucas Quinn (fifth), Eoin Gallagher (sixth) and Nathan Furtado (seventh) contributed. Against Somerset Berkley, Levesque (second), Quinn (third), Gallagher (seventh) and Nathan Furtado (ninth) finished in the top 10.  Against Apponequet, Fairhaven's Maison Sweet was second in 17:12 and Owen Benoit was third in 18:04. In the loss to Somerset Berkley, Sweet finished first while Benoit was second and Scott Joseph came in eighth (19:23). The Blue Devils (0-2, 0-2 SCC) visit Dighton-Rehoboth on Sept. 27. The Lakers (4-0, 4-0 SCC) host Old Rochester and Dighton-Rehoboth on Oct. 4.

Old Colony 22, Bristol-Aggie 35

Jacob Patnuade was the first overall runner to cross the finish line with a pace time of 6:39 and Nik Sedell followed closely behind with a time of 6:45 along with Grant Ashley with a time of 7:03 on the 3-mile course. Ryan Eby (pace time of 7:27) and Brady Maguire (pace time of 7:48) closed out the top five Cougars. Old Colony (1-0) visits Norfolk Aggie on Sept. 27.

GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY

Old Rochester 15, GNB Voc-Tech 50

The Bulldogs (1-0) swept the top five spots with Hannah Whalley (first; 20:31), Maddie Conner (second; 21:32), Aubrey Heis (third; 21:44), Alexia Gonsalves (fourth; 21:53) and Corrine Robert (fifth; 22:07). For GNB Voc-Tech (0-3, 0-3 SCC), Elena Aponte (25:02), Gabby Venturini (25:45), Neveah Escobar (26:06) and Sofia Pereira (26:21) contributed.

Bishop Feehan 17, Bishop Stang 46

Against Bishop Feehan, Lola Bergeron was fourth (20:24) followed by Julia Pelczarski (eighth; 21:40), Julia Downey (ninth; 22:22), Bree Killion (10th) and Rebecca Antonio (11th). Stang travels to St. Joseph Prep on Sept. 27.

Apponequet’s Hannah Kuriscak finished first overall while Keltey Fournier was second. Ava Wisniewski was third against Somerset Berkley and fourth against Fairhaven. Against the Raiders, Isabella Sergio came in fourth and Madeline Polochick was fifth. Against Fairhaven, Sergio took fifth and Polochick was sixth. For Fairhaven, Emma Flannery was third overall while Lily LaFountain and Natalie Yochim placed eighth and ninth against Apponequet. In the win over Somerset Berkley, Flannery was first (22:37) while LaFountain and Yochim were second and third.  The Blue Devils (1-1, 1-1 SCC) visit Dighton-Rehoboth on Sept. 27. The Lakers (4-0, 4-0 SCC) host Old Rochester and Dighton-Rehoboth on Oct. 4.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Old Colony 3, Sturgis West 1

The Cougars rallied after losing the first set 25-19 to win the next three 25-22, 25-10, 25-19 to capture their first victory under first-year head coach Lauren McGowan. McKenna Benoit had nine aces, three kills and five digs while Allison Bumpus had six aces, one assist and five digs. Alyssa Couto (four aces and one assist), Arianna Ribeiro (two aces, two kills and one assist) and Ambra Arsenault (eight digs) also contributed for Old Colony (1-3).

Wareham 3, Westport 0

Riley Florindo had 26 digs, two kills and 17 service receptions while Hannah Milne added two kills, three aces and eight service points. Julia McDuffy, Stoney Ferry and Andrew Harty played well on defense. The Vikings (3-4) host Bourne on Monday.

Cardinal Spellman 3, Bishop Stang 1

Mae Lima led the Spartans (1-3, 1-2 SEC) with nine kills and three aces while Ali James added seven kills and three blocks and Darian Dias chipped in with one kill, one ace and 20 digs. Lilly Manning had three kills and four aces.

FIELD HOCKEY

St. Mary’s 2, Bishop Stang 1

In Stang’s first game on its new home turf field, Teal Galligan played a crucial role in leading the defense throughout this game and also had an assist on the goal that was scored by Lily Duclos. “Great overall team effort,” said Stang head coach Kara Caron. “The transition to turf always takes a little adjustment as it is much faster paced. The girls worked out the kinks early on and finished strong.” Seniors Ava Meehan, Olivia Brousseau and Ava Pacheco worked well together in moving the ball up the field on offense. The Spartans (1-1-0, 0-1-0 CCL) host Bishop Feehan on Thursday.

GOLF

Apponequet 274, Bourne 292

Seniors Luke Richards (42) and Jason Demers (43) led the way for the undefeated Lakers (5-0) at LeBaron Hills Country Club while senior Marcus Kuriscak (45) and sophomore Hunter Owen (45) also turned in key scores.

Bishop Stang 234, Matignon 108

Matt Oliveira was the match low medalist with a 3-under par 32 for 42 points. Redmond Podkowa shot even par for 37 points and Kyle Farias and Noah Cormier followed with a 1-over 36s for 34 points each. Will Kippe had a strong showing in his first match of the season. The Spartans (6-1, 4-0 CCL) host Arlington Catholic on Thursday.

Durfee 102, New Bedford 35

Trevor Roderiques led the Whalers at Fall River Country Club by shooting a 52, which was good for 13 points. Luke Tarpey (55 for 9), Cameron Molleo (56 for 8) and Luke Ferreira (59 for 5) also contributed. New Bedford (0-8, 0-3 SEC) hosts Brockton on Tuesday.

Old Colony 9, Norfolk Aggie 0

The whole team played well with low scores for the day from Luke Butler (38), Brady Weglowski (38), Michael Niemi, (40) and Owen Levasseur (41). The Cougars (5-0-0, 4-0-0 MAC) host Southeastern on Thursday.

BOYS SOCCER

South Shore 5, Old Colony 0

The Cougars, who fall to 0-3-1, visit Norfolk Aggie on Thursday.

Nauset 1, New Bedford 0

The Whalers suffered their first loss of the season. New Bedford (1-1-0, 1-0-0 SEC) hosts Durfee on Thursday.
