Tatum Reis is known for her scrappy play on the basketball court.

The New Bedford High senior’s heads-up play in the final seconds of Tuesday night’s Southeast Conference game against Durfee was the difference.

With the game tied at 43, New Bedford’s Lexi Thompson missed an off-balance shot attempt in the paint and Reis was there for the offensive rebound and putback to lift the Whalers to a thrilling 45-43 come-from-behind victory over the visiting Hilltoppers on Senior Night.

“Tatum was in the right place at the right time,” said New Bedford head coach Jordan Pina. “I’m glad the seniors got that one. We grinded that one out.”

The Whalers trailed 17-10 at halftime, but outscored the Hilltoppers 23-11 in the third quarter to enter the fourth quarter ahead 33-28.

“It’s Senior Night and it’s Durfee,” Pina said. “We talked about it pregame that it’s a game of runs and we went on a big run without Lexi (Thompson) which was a huge boost. We were able to save some minutes from her. Zaria (Anderson) hit some big shots. Vanessa (Bucha) was fantastic.”

New Bedford honored its six seniors — Reis, Bucha, Mari MacMaster, Hannah Pereira, Kaidyn Cifelli and Ariana DaPonte. DaPonte, the team manager, got to start the game and scored a basket before play was stopped so her teammates could swarm the court in celebration.
