SouthCoast high school scores and highlights from Wednesday, Feb. 15

From an unseeded heat, Old Rochester’s 4x400 relay team of Wesner Archelus, Sam Balsis, Philip le Gassick and John Bowman came in first place to lift Old Rochester to the Div. 4 title with 43 points. Newburyport was second (39) followed by North Reading (36).

It was the Bulldogs’ first indoor divisional title since 2017.

“Very exciting,” said Old Rochester head coach Cindy Tilden. “We were thinking maybe we’d place third.”

Murray Copps won the mile (4:34.50), finishing in front of teammate Tyler Young (fourth; 4:37.38), and was 14th in the 2-mile (10:56.55). Archelus came in fourth in the 55 hurdles (7.97). Old Rochester’s 4x800 relay team of Copps, Young, Nolan Bushnell and Aidan Silk came in first place with a school-record time of 8:18.43.

Bishop Stang’s Jacob Cookinham won the shot put with a meet-record throw of 67-00.50. Andrew Fortin came in seventh in the 600 (1:28.54) and Stang’s 4x400 relay team took second place (3:35.96).

For Apponequet, Aydan Fournier was fifth in the mile (4:39.10) while Justin Serrechhia came in sixth in the 55 (6.74).

The Old Rochester girls got strong performances from Audrey Thomas in the 300 (seventh; 42.83), Alexia Gonsalves in the mile (11th; 5:44.75), Madison Conner in the 1,000 (14th; 3:21.95) and Corrine Robert in the 2-mile (12:53.82). Thomas’ time in the 300 broke the school record.

Apponequet’s Reagan Flynn was 14th in the 55 (7.72) while Madeline Polochick was 19th in the 13:19.47).

Bishop Stang’s Leah Butter came in 16th in the mile (5:54.54).

BOYS BASKETBALL

Old Rochester 72, Bishop Stang 52

Jacob Smith and Liam Geraghty had 15 points apiece to lead the Bulldogs to their 16th win of the season. Sawyer Fox added 11 points while Robert Spenard had eight. “The kids played unselfish basketball and Smith, Fox and Geraghty lead the way offensively in double figures,” said Old Rochester head coach Steve Carvalho. “Many contributed again on a nightly basis.” For Bishop Stang, Daejon Gibson had 14 points while Sage Baptiste added 12. The Bulldogs (16-3, 9-2 SCC) visit Apponequet on Friday.

Old Colony 73, Sturgis West 37

Ryan Scott scored a team-high 15 points to power the Cougars. He also had seven rebounds, three assists, one steal and one block. Max Finney added 14 points, four rebounds, three assists and four steals while Matt McGuiggan had 11 points, one rebound, three assists and one steal.

Middleboro 74, Dartmouth 63

Dartmouth, which falls to 15-3, hosts Brockton at 3 p.m. on Sunday.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Falmouth 30, Old Rochester 26

Caroline Brogioli led the Bulldogs with eight points while Emma Johnson and Amber Engel had five points apiece. ORR (6-11, 5-6 SCC) hosts Apponequet on Friday.

BOYS HOCKEY

Diman 3, GNB Voc-Tech 2

Mike Melo turned in another strong game in goal, making several key saves. The Bengals outshot the Bears 28-21. Matt Harding had a goal and an assist while Ayden Chisholm had a goal. Voc-Tech (0-17, 0-9 SCC) hosts Monomoy at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday.
