SouthCoast high school scores and highlights from Saturday, Jan. 15 and Sunday, Jan. 16

Here's a look at the scores and highlights from high school action over the weekend.

It was a big weekend for SouthCoast track and field athletes.

Old Rochester’s Colby Gross won the 400 meters at the Northeast Invitational with a meet-record time of 49.83, which qualified him for Nationals in March.

Old Rochester’s Jen Williams took third in the high jump (5-4) and fourth in the hurdles (8.77).

Bishop Stang’s Jacob Cookinham took second place in the shot put at the East Coast Track & Field Invitational with a throw of 62-11.25, which broke the meet record by four feet before No. 1 seeded Tarik Robinson-O’Hagan of Woonsocket bested him with a New England record throw and top in national throw of 67-2.25. Wareham’s Garrett Goodman placed fourth (46- 2).

Also for Stang, Andrew Caldera took 17th out of 70 runners in the mile with a personal-best 4:43. The Spartans’ 4x800 team of Caldera, John Campbell, Andrew Weaver and Andrew Fortin came in seventh (9:06).

WRESTLING

Weymouth Tournament

The Whalers finished second place out of 14 teams and just six points behind first-place Whitman-Hanston. Jose Bonilla won at 195 pounds while New Bedford got second-place finishes from Alex Teixiera (120), Mitchel Thompson (160) and Luis Lopez (285). Luis Garcia (106) and Nathanyel Caron (126) both took third place while Anderson Cruz came in fourth at 182. Eric Boucher (132), Mike Polanco (152) and Tayel Guzman (170) each took sixth. New Bedford faces Bridgewater-Raynham on Thursday.

BOYS HOCKEY

Bishop Stang 7, Bourne 0

The Spartans extended their unbeaten streak to 18 games dating back to last season. Justin Gouveia led the way with three goals while Quinn Pine added two goals and an assist and Jack Jedrey had three assists. Seamus Marshall (one goal and one assist), Aidan Cousineau (one goal), Devon Beck (one assist) and Noah Grigson (one assist) also contributed on offense while Brayden Bennett (five saves) and Matt Dore (six saves) split time in net. The Spartans (8-0-0, 3-0-0 CCL) host Martha’s Vineyard on Saturday at 2 p.m.

GIRLS HOCKEY

St. Mary’s 5, Bishop Stang 2

Mikayla Brightman scored both of Stang’s goals while Alexandria Yost had two assists and Emily Curran and Kacey Curran each had one assist for Stang (6-3-1, 4-3-1 CCL).

BOYS BASKETBALL

Apponequet 54, Case 41

Nate Levesque had a monster game, scoring 25 points and grabbing 17 rebounds as the Lakers captured their second win of the season on Sunday. Logan Miller added 12 points and eight rebounds while Josh Keller had 10 points and six rebounds. Apponequet head coach Jim Cabucio praised the defense of Jack Gagnier. “Gagnier set an intense defensive tempo that energized the Lakers in the second half coming out of a 25-22 deficit at halftime,” Cabucio said. “Sophomore forward Nate Levesque continued to excel on both sides of the floor, hustling to 25 points and 17 rebounds.” The Lakers (2-5, 2-2 SCC) visit Dighton-Rehoboth on Tuesday.

Bridgewater-Raynham 72, New Bedford 57

Javion Lloyd led the Whalers with 12 points while Collin Rodrigues added 11 as New Bedford lost its Southeast Conference opener on Friday night. The Whalers (1-5, 0-1 SEC) host Dartmouth on Tuesday.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Westport 33, GNB Voc-Tech 31

The Bears lost at the buzzer on a missed three-point attempt. Kaitlyn Duarte had a team-high 17 points while Kara Ferreira added seven. Voc-Tech (0-6, 0-3 SCC) visits Seekonk on Tuesday.
