Southcrest community steps up to help neighbors impacted by flood

SAN DIEGO — Neighbors in Southcrest offered free food and clothes to support flood victims Sunday night. The area was hit hard by Monday’s flood waters.

“It was like a get together to help the community,” said Karina Becerra.

Becerra and her family and friends cooked tacos and passed out water and clothes to their impacted neighbors.

“It’s just everyone helping each other,” she said. “It’s really heartbreaking and now everyone is putting a hand in.”

On Beta Street, Oscar Hernandez set up a stand and offered tacos, rice, beans and drinks for anyone in need. His friends and family donated money to help him support Southcrest residents who lined up for his free meal.

“These people feel bad, they lost everything,” Hernandez said.

Elivra Paulin also lives on Beta Street and appreciated the generous donations.

“I think everyone is tired, emotionally and physically, and when you see people here that care and they make us food, it means a lot,” said Paulin.

City crews spent all day Sunday clearing culverts and debris. So far, more than 1,400 tons of debris, trash and mud have been removed from the areas hit hard by the flood waters.
