Southeast Polk boys basketball starts season strong

The Southeast Polk basketball team began its season with a win when the Rams took on Ankeny Centennial in their season opener.

The Rams faced off against the Jaguars on Nov. 30 and won 54-49.

Ankeny Centennial was ahead for much of the game, as the Jaguars were up 33-23 at halftime and maintained the lead going into the fourth quarter, up 45-36 at the end of the third.

Southeast Polk battled back to take control of the game in the final quarter, outscoring the Jaguars 18-4 in the fourth quarter to grab the win.

Leading the Rams in the win was junior Riley Edwards, who put up a team-high 23 points on eight for 15 shooting. Edwards also contributed five rebounds and two steals to help the team come back.

Also putting up strong scoring numbers were juniors Lincoln Cantrall and Kadyn Proctor. Cantrall had 14 points for the Rams and added three rebounds, one assist and a block to the stat sheet while Proctor scored 10 points on five for five shooting as well as nine rebounds.

Sophomore Connor Moberly was strong on the boards for the Rams, grabbing a team-leading 10 rebounds, dishing out three assists and adding two points. Freshman Bode Goodman also contributed in the game, leading with three steals and four assists. Goodman also scored five points for the Rams.

Southeast Polk will look to add to this win when the Rams play Des Moines Lincoln at 7:45 p.m. Dec. 3 at Southeast Polk High School.

Bowling picks up first win

Just days after falling to Ottumwa in the season opener, both Southeast Polk bowling teams notched wins when the Rams took on Des Moines Hoover.

The Rams started their season with a matchup against Ottumwa on Nov. 30, where the girls fell 2,553 to 2,289. Leading the girls in the loss were juniors Kendra Huitt and Katelynn Edmundson. Huitt finished third overall with a 349 series while Edmundson followed in fourth with a 347 series. Huitt bowled a 202 in her high game while Edmundson rolled a 194 in hers.

The boys were defeated by Ottumwa 3,187 to 2,605. Junior Jordan Killmer led the way bowling a 450 series to finish third. Killmer bowled a 236 in his high game. Following Killmer for Southeast Polk were juniors Steven Rash and Garrett Rayl, who finished seventh and eighth. Rash bowled a 382 series while Rayl rolled a 375 series.

Both Rams teams bounced back in the second competition of the season, as they each defeated Des Moines Hoover on Dec. 1. The girls took down the Huskies 2,190 to 1,584 while the boys defeated Hoover 2,986 to 2,204.

Leading the Rams for the girls was once again Edmundson and Huitt. Edmundson finished first with a 327 series and a high game of 189. Huitt followed by bowling a 315 series and a 168 in her high game. Also having a strong game for the Southeast Polk girls was freshman Darah Savick. Savick bowled a 306 series and a 153 for her high game.

On the boys’ end, junior Jacob Bianchi and senior Tyler Waugh led the way. Bianchi finished the day with a 503 series and bowled a perfect game of 300 while Waugh bowled a 440 series and a 265 high game.

The Rams will look to build on these wins as both teams next play Ankeny at 3 p.m. Dec. 7 at Great Escape.
