Southeast Polk football team beats Ankeny Centennial, improves to 7-1

The Southeast Polk football team added another win to its record when the Rams took on Ankeny Centennial on Friday night.

The Rams (7-1) defeated the Jaguars 42-16, boosted by a strong second half in which Southeast Polk scored 28 points.

Leading Southeast Polk was running back Abu Sama, who scored three touchdowns off 22 rushes for 178 yards.

Junior quarterback Connor Moberly had a strong game as well, going 10-for-15 for 133 yards and a touchdown and also rushing six times for 36 yards and a touchdown.

Senior Sam Goode led all receivers with five receptions for 59 yards while junior Thaden Abbas had the lone receiving touchdown off a three-yard catch.

Leading the defense was senior Obald Niyonkuru, who had 8.5 total tackles, including 0.5 sacks and 1.5 tackles for loss, while sophomore Cooper Martinson followed with seven total tackles.

Senior Gabe Stiles had a fumble recovery, returning it 93 yards for a touchdown, and junior Mason Van Der Brink had an interception and returned it 15 yards.

The Rams will look to build on this performance when they take on Cedar Rapids Jefferson at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 21, at Kingston Stadium.

Volleyball falls to Johnston

The Southeast Polk volleyball team traveled to Johnston on Oct. 11, falling in three sets.

The Rams fell 25-13 in each of the two sets before dropping the third set 25-19.

Southeast Polk struggled to get much going on the offensive end, finishing with a team hitting percentage of -.013.

The Dragons had seven total blocks and 42 digs in the game to help hold off the Rams.

Junior Ava Goldsberry led the Rams with five total kills in the match while seniors Hannah Schwemm and Emma Etnyre had seven and six assists respectively.

Schwemm and Goldsberry also had two aces each in the match.

Swimming competes against Ankeny

The Southeast Polk swim team finished out its dual meet schedule with a meet against Ankeny on Oct. 11.

The Rams fell to the Hawks 128-58, winning three events.

Freshmen Brynnly Woolums and Holli Hetzer and junior Kennedy Chapman all took first place in an event.

Woolums grabbed first in the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:00.13 while Capman took first in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:11.22. Hetzer had the top spot in the dive with a score of 228.50.

Woolums also took second in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:25.58 and Capman took second in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:25.05.
