Southeast Polk girls swimming team off to a strong start

The Southeast Polk girls swimming team has had a solid start to its season with a few competitions under its belt.

The Rams began their season with a dual meet against Indianola on Aug. 23, defeating the Indians 108-77.

Junior Elizabeth Douglas, sophomore Jordan Fertig and freshman Brynnly Woolums led the team in the win with two first-place finishes each.

The Rams then competed in the Fort Dodge Triangular on Aug. 30, taking on Fort Dodge and Des Moines Lincoln.

Des Moines Lincoln grabbed the top spot with a score of 58 while the Rams came in second, scoring 52. The Dodgers finished with 50 points to place third.

Woolums led Southeast Polk once more with two first-place finishes as well as two second-place finishes as well. She grabbed first in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:01.13 and in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:25.84. Her second-place finishes came in the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard freestyle, recording times of 26.44 seconds and 57.52 seconds respectively.

Junior Kennedy Capman and freshman Holli Hetzer also picked up a first-place finish at the meet, Capman in the 200-yard individual medley and Hetzer in the one-meter diving. Capman finished the medley with a time of 2:23.79 while Hetzer scored a 184.85 on the dive. Capman also placed second in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:11.69.

The Rams finished first in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:48.91 as well.

Southeast Polk will look to build on its performance when the Rams host Johnston at 5:30 p.m. Sept. 6 at Southeast Polk High School.

Football grabs another win

The Southeast Polk football team picked up another win when the Rams traveled to Valley on Friday night. The Rams defeated the Tigers 24-7.

The teams remained close in the first half, with the game tied at seven after the first quarter and Southeast Polk up 10-7 at halftime. However, the Rams were able to pull away in the second half, scoring two touchdowns and holding the Tigers at bay at the same time.

Leading Southeast Polk was senior running back Abu Sama, who rushed 20 times for 126 yards and two touchdowns. He also had two receptions for 17 yards.

Junior quarterback Connor Moberly had a solid game as well, finishing 12-for-16 for 145 yards and a touchdown.

Catching the receiving touchdown was junior wide receiver Carson Robbins, who led all receivers with two receptions for 44 yards and a touchdown. Senior Owen Wignall followed with two catches for 31 yards.

Senior Cole Rogers and junior Draven Woods led the defense with seven total tackles each, with Woods having one tackle for loss and Rogers also recording an interception.

The Rams will look to make it three wins when they play Waukee Northwest at 7 p.m. Sept. 9 at Southeast Polk High School.
