Southeastern Pennsylvania set for heat advisory Thursday

Aug. 3—The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for the warm corner of Pennsylvania, the southeast.

Berks, Chester, Montgomery, Delaware counties are among the spots in the advisory for Thursday 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Heat indexes of 100 to 103 degrees are possible, according to the advisory.

The advisory also reads in part: "Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances.

"Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When possible reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing when possible."

The latest forecast highs from AccuWeather are Reading, 97 degrees; Norristown, 96; Pottstown, 93; West Chester, 92. Date record highs are in the upper 90s.

Highs near 90 are likely Friday with a chance of thunderstorms, according to AccuWeather.

Due to a sustained heat index of over 95 degrees this week, the Animal Rescue League of Berks County has issued a Code Red for Reading on Thursday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Friday from noon to 6 p.m.

Owners and caretakers of dogs within Reading must keep them indoors except for supervised bathroom breaks and exercise because of the temperatures that are forecast. The measure was added to the city code in 2015.

Noncompliance can result in the animal being removed by an animal control officer from the property and impounded at the ARL in Cumru Township.

Owners would have 48 hours after the Code Red has been lifted to pick up their dogs, and will be subject to applicable boarding fees.

Anyone witnessing an unsupervised dog left outside in Reading during those hours should call the ARL at 610-373-8830.
