The Southern Boulevard Bridge that connects the town of Palm Beach and West Palm Beach reopened after being closed for almost two hours Sunday because of a malfunction. A 6:15 p.m. alert from the town said the bridge "is open and operational."

Original story:

The Southern Boulevard Bridge that connects the town of Palm Beach and West Palm Beach is malfunctioning for the second time since it opened Sept. 1.

The town issued a release shortly before 4:30 p.m. Sunday urging motorists to seek an alternate route. The release did not give any details on the malfunction or the expected length of closure.

The bridge malfunctioned Sept. 7 because a wire was inadvertently severed by a subcontractor, a Florida Department of Transportation spokesperson confirmed. The bridge was closed to traffic between 1:45 p.m. and 4:15 p.m., FDOT spokesperson Angel Gardner said.

Gardner said then that the FDOT does not expect a similar issue to occur as construction continues on the bridge.

Work on the project began in April 2017, and included replacing the drawbridge that connects Palm Beach to West Palm Beach and the tide relief bridge next to Mar-a-Lago; adding new decorative lighting; pedestrian features; traffic signals; signage and drainage.
