Southern France Lashed by Storms After Drought and Record Temperatures

Parts of southern France were lashed by thunderstorms on Wednesday, August 17, following a summer of heatwaves and drought.

Footage by Melissa Messaoud shows lightning, strong wind, and heavy rain, as water cascades down a street in Toulon.

According to the country’s weather service, strong thunderstorms dropped 20 to 40 mm of rain in less than an hour in the Bouches-du-Rhone and Var departments.

Multiple warnings were in place for rain, flooding and thunderstorms. Credit: Melissa Messaoud via Storyful
