Update: Southern end of Highway 1 closure near Big Sur moves back after sinkhole repairs

Update, July 5, 11:30 a.m.:

The southern closure of Highway 1 returned to Limekiln State Park near Big Sur at 8 a.m. Tuesday after sinkhole repairs wrapped up, according to Caltrans.

Caltrans repair crews addressed drainage issues and repaired the sinkhole that appeared one mile south of Nacimiento-Fergusson Road on Sunday, the state road agency said in a news release.

Highway 1 is currently closed from Limekiln State Park to Lucia in Monterey County due to rock slides, according to Caltrans.

Original Story:

The southern closure of Highway 1 in Monterey County has been moved due to a sinkhole, according to Caltrans.

The southern closure of Highway 1 shifted south from Limekiln State Park in Monterey County to Pacific Valley after a sinkhole “appeared on the center line of the roadway” one mile south of Nacimiento-Fergusson Road, the state transportation agency said in a news release Sunday.

The route is now closed from 2 miles north of Plaskett to Limekiln State Park, Caltrans said on its highway information website.

In addition, the Highway 1 is closed from Limekiln State Park to Lucia due to rock slides, Caltrans said.

“The closure of Highway 1 at Pacific Valley provides adequate room for large vehicles and trucks to safely turn around,” Caltrans spokesman Kevin Drabinski wrote in the release.

“Updates will be provided when the repairs are complete, and the southern closure can be moved north again to Limekiln,” Drabinski said.

Caltrans crews have been working for months to repair slide damage near Big Sur after a series of severe winter storms.

Caltrans previously said that a reopening date would be determined in mid-July.
