Southern Lee tennis tops Lee County

Sep. 14—Southern Lee went across town to rival Lee County Tuesday evening as the two schools met for the first time in women's tennis this season.

Each team fielded a full line-up, and the teams squared off for more than two hours before the Lady Cavaliers scored an 8-1 victory.

The win was the third in four matches for Southern, which improved to 5-3 overall and 4-2 in Sandhills Athletic Conference play. The Lady Cavaliers' conference losses came at the hands of SAC co-leaders Pinecrest and Union Pines, and Southern was very competitive in the match with Union Pines last week.

In singles, Lee County scored its lone victory when its No. 2, Grace Britton, got past the Lady Cavaliers' Kambell Beasley 8-6. The other matches all went to the visitors, with No. 1 Kate Jackson beating Brookin Underwood 8-1, No. 3 Evie Eller topping Peyton Koneski by the same score, Carrie Bryan downing Savannah Mullins 8-0 at No. 4, Blair Young winning over Silvia Gama Rios 8-3 at No. 5, and Yareli Lopez beating Sophia Scott by an 8-1 score.

In doubles, Jackson and Beasley topped Underwood and Britton 8-3 at the top of the order. At No. 2, Eller and Bryan swept Koneski and Mullins 8-0.

At No. 3 doubles, Southern put in Lily McLeod and Lexi Ramirez to plat Gama Rios and Scott, and the Lady Cavaliers won that one 8-4.

The teams will meet again in the regular-season finale on Oct. 6 at Southern. Southern visits Richmond on Thursday, while the Lady Jackets host Union Pines that same afternoon.
