Southern Lee wins tennis season finale

Jun. 12—The 2021 tennis season came to an anticlimactic end on Thursday, as Southern Lee closed out the season with an 8-1 win over shorthanded Lee County on the Southern tennis courts.

Only two singles matches were actually contested. At No. 1 singles, Lee's Kelsey Smith beat Carmen Dominguez 8-1, while at No. 2, Southern's Yareli Lopez-Mendoza defeated Brooklin Underwood 8-0.

The Cavaliers did have their full team present, so they earned walkover wins in the other matches. Awarded singles wins were Anna Boone, Kate Jackson, Joelle Blakely and Mackenzie Deck. Southern's three doubles teams of Dominguez-Kelcee Ayers, Boone-Jackson, and Blakely-Kambell Beasley also claimed wins.

Southern Lee ends the season with a 5-4 record overall and in conference, while Lee ends 1-7 in both. The dual-team playoffs for 2021 were cancelled, so both teams' regular seasons are over.

Both schools will have tennis players competing in the 3A Mideast Regional on June 18-19 at the Burlington Tennis Center. While conference tournaments have been cancelled, the regionals and state tournaments are being played.
