Southern Michigan Bank & Trust opens in Sturgis

Southern Michigan Bank & Trust has opened at 200 John St., in Sturgis.

A grand opening was held Thursday, which included a ribbon cutting ceremony with Sturgis Area Chamber of Commerce.

Following the ceremony, Southern Michigan Bank & Trust CEO John Castle shared some words with the group that had gathered.

He thanked all in attendance for coming out to celebrate the opening of the company’s newest banking office.

“Coincidentally, this is also the year of our 150th anniversary,” he said.

Castle said it’s a big year for Southern Michigan Bank & Trust. Since beginning in 1872, the company has offered continuous banking, he said. The bank never closed, not even during the Depression.

Castle said the company is proud of the work that has gone into creating the Sturgis branch.

“We’re really proud of that,” he said. “There was a lot of energy and effort that went into creating this successful branch. We’re really proud of it.”

Castle said it took countless hours by many staff members to make it happen. He thanked MOSO Village and the City of Sturgis as well.

Castle said he’s proud to be a bigger part of the Sturgis community. The office is the first in Sturgis, though Southern Michigan Bank & Trust has already been servicing the area, he said. There are four other branches in St. Joseph County and another drive-thru facility is in the works in front of Meijer on S. Centerville Road in Sturgis.

A business after hours followed the ribbon cutting Thursday with prizes, food, and drinks.
