The Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce assisted Steve and Caroline Peskoe in their ribbon cutting reopening of the Southern Mill in downtown Louisville recently.

Caroline Peskoe said that her husband’s home-made wood-work, charcuterie and cutting boards and tables have been for sale at the store for a couple of years and when they heard that it might be for sale the couple jumped at the chance.

The store will continue to carry some of the home décor, Wade Franklin pottery, Burlebo brand men’s apparel, but has added a collection of casual women’s wear and shoes.

“Our Georgia-grown shelf are all Georgia-grown members, and we have honey, olive oil, cheese straws, shortbread straws and syrup,” Peskoe said.

Peskoe, who has worked for Washington EMC for nearly 37 years, said that she never imagined owning a small boutique shop like Southern Mill, but is excited about the Sandersville couple’s new venture.

Jan Wasden, who worked for the previous owner and has been running the store for years, will remain as the primary face in the business.

“Jan and I went to the mart (AmericasMart in Atlanta) and I realized we were about the have fun,” Peskoe said. “We realized that there’s nowhere to go and get a pair of shoes locally. We have men’s floafers (water-resistant loafers) and a number of different shoes for women.”

She and Wasden said that a new women’s Modzori reversible shoe has been particularly popular since the store opened March 1.

“You can wear it as a black shoe or a white shoe, it’s reversable. The leather part on top you can twist and change it and it doesn’t effect the shoe at all. They are also a comfort shoe,” Peskoe said. “We’re still getting a feel for what’s needed. We want to work with the other stores on the square and offer different things, items that do not compete with what they are offering.”

Southern Mill is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays; 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Thursdays; and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays.
