Southern Miss baseball in the 2022 MLB Draft: Tracking the Golden Eagles picked

HATTIESBURG — Southern Miss baseball entered the 2022 MLB Draft knowing that its pitching would be of great interest to major league teams.

That was confirmed on Monday afternoon, when lefthanded arm Dalton Rogers went to the Boston Red Sox with the 99th overall pick.

Fellow reliever Tyler Stuart became the second Golden Eagle off the board when the New York Mets took him with pick No. 179.

Another bullpen piece, Landon Harper, went on the third day of the draft to the Atlanta Braves with pick No. 425. Pitcher Ben Ethridge followed at No. 444 overall to the Minnesota Twins. Garrett Ramsey came later, going 489th overall to the Boston Red Sox.

Excluding 2020, when the MLB Draft was shortened to just five rounds, USM has had a player selected in every draft since 2008.

Here's a list of the Southern Miss baseball players and signees to be drafted so far.

Draft eligible Southern Miss baseball players

LHP Dalton Rogers

Drafted: Boston Red Sox

Slot Value: $617,500, Round 3, No. 99 overall

There were few bullpen arms across college baseball last season nastier than Dalton Rogers. The southpaw limited opposing batters to a .128 average on the season and only surrendered one homer in 37 innings. His walks occasionally got him in trouble, but his 1.95 ERA shows he was able to overcome that, striking out 13.86 batters per nine innings.

RHP Tyler Stuart

Drafted: New York Mets, Round 6, No. 179 overall

Slot Value: $288,900

Another Southern Miss bullpen arm came off the board with the New York Mets' 179th overall pick in the sixth round. Tyler Stuart is a scout's dream, standing at 6-foot-9, 250 pounds with a fastball that sits in the upper 90s. He concluded the 2022 season with a 3.38 ERA in 40 innings pitched.

RHP Landon Harper

Drafted: Atlanta Braves, Round 14, No. 425 overall

Yet another arm from the back end of the Southern Miss bullpen went off the draft board. Landon Harper arrived in Hattiesburg after spending two seasons at Pearl River, and concluded the 2022 campaign with a 3.30 ERA. The junior struck out 50 hitters in 43⅔ innings and walked just nine. He was a bit prone to the long ball, though, surrendering six homers on the year.

RHP Ben Ethridge

Drafted: Minnesota Twins, Round 15, No. 444 overall

Ben Ethridge made it four Southern Miss pitchers selected in this year's MLB Draft when the Minnesota Twins selected him in the 15th round. Used primarily as a starter in 2021, Ethridge made five starts and seven relief appearances for the Golden Eagles this season, pitching to a 4.15 ERA.

RHP Garrett Ramsey

Drafted: Boston Red Sox, Round 16, No. 489 overall

The fifth Southern Miss arm to be selected in the 2022 MLB Draft was righthander Garrett Ramsey. The fourth-year junior was excellent out of the bullpen for Scott Berry's team, posting a 2.61 ERA in 31 innings of work. Ramsey's stuff proved to be difficult to handle for collegiate hitters, whiffing 45 batters and allowing just one homer.
