HATTIESBURG — Southern Miss baseball's elite trio of weekend starters is down to just one.

Sophomore righthander Hurston Waldrep entered the transfer portal on Wednesday, according to Kendall Rogers of D1 Baseball.

Waldrep, USM's Sunday starter for the majority of the season, concluded his 2022 campaign with a 3.20 ERA. He struck out 140 batters in 90 innings, including a pair of double-digit strikeout performances in the NCAA Tournament.

Having already lost Saturday starter Hunter Riggins to graduation, the Golden Eagles are now set to return only Friday night man Tanner Hall for 2023.

Southern Miss leaned heavily on its pitching staff last season as it won the Conference USA regular-season title and reached the NCAA super regionals for just the second time in program history.

The Golden Eagles boasted the nation's second-best team ERA.

It was easy to project a similar level of excellence for Southern Miss in 2023 with both Hall and Waldrep set to return, but the Golden Eagles will now have to replace two excellent weekend arms as they look toward 2023.
