Southern Miss head men’s basketball coach Jay Ladner has been hospitalized with an “emergency heart-related condition,” the school said Tuesday.

Ladner will be stepping away from the team, but is expected to make a full recovery.

Assistant Juan Cardona will serve as the acting head coach when the Golden Eagles face Old Dominion on Wednesday.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with Jay and his family as he works to make a full recovery,” Southern Miss Director of Athletics Jeremy McClain said. “We will continue to support our coaches and student-athletes at the highest level while he is away from the team.”

Southern Miss is currently 12-11 and 6-5 in Sun Belt play heading into a six-game home-stand.
