Southern Restaurant and Lounge shooting marks 5th mass shooting in Louisville in 2023

The mass shooting early Sunday morning represented the fifth such event in Louisville in 2023.

The nonprofit Gun Violence Archive tracks all mass shootings and defines it as a shooting in which at least four victims are hit by gunfire.

Here's a look at each mass shooting in Louisville this year:

April 10: Old National Bank - 5 dead, 8 injured

A gunman opened fire at 333 E. Main St., inside the downtown Louisville branch of Old National Bank, on April 10. Five people, Tommy Elliott, 63, Jim Tutt Jr., 64, Josh Barrick, 40, Juliana Farmer, 45, and Deana Eckert 57, were killed.

Eight other people were injured in the shooting, including Louisville Metro Police Department Officer Nickolas Wilt, who was released from the hospital in July after being shot in the head responding to the incident.

The shooter was killed by police.

"You may think this will never happen to you … to your friends or loved ones," said Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg. "I used to think that. The sad truth is that now no one in our city, no one in our state, no one in our country has that luxury anymore."

April 15: Chickasaw Park - 2 dead, 4 injured

Two men were killed and four others injured in a shooting at Chickasaw Park on Southwestern Parkway on April 15.

LMPD Deputy Chief Paul Humphrey said at a press conference that "someone started shooting into the crowd, hitting at least six people."

"This has been an unspeakable week of tragedy for our city," Greenberg said. "This is not our city. This is not who we are. This is not who we want to be. ... This is enough."

May 10: Fourth Street - 1 dead, 4 injured

One person was killed and four others injured outside a business on Fourth Street, May 10.

The Jefferson County Coroners Office said Demontae Jakwan Tyreek Marshall, 22, was pronounced dead at University of Louisville Hospital. The other victims, two men and two women, were taken to the hospital.

Aug 16: Russell neighborhood - 4 injured

Four adults were injured in a shooting on the 1800 block of West Muhammad Ali Boulevard on Aug. 16.

All four victims were transported to University Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, LMPD said.

Aug 27: Southern Restaurant and Lounge - 2 dead, 5 injured

Two men were killed after a shooting at Southern Restaurant and Lounge, 301 W. Market St., on Aug. 22. One victim died at the scene while another died later at University of Louisville hospital

First Division Maj. Shannon Lauder told local media that the shooting started between restaurant-goers and people on the street. Police later confirmed the shooting took place outside the business.

Four other people were taken to University Hospital with gunshot wounds while a fifth person was treated at Jewish Hospital with injuries sustained in a fall at the scene.
