Southern University interviews last semi-finalist for chancellor position

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — Southern University is down to three candidates and weeks away from deciding on its next chancellor.

The last in-person interview was Wednesday with Carmen Walters, the former president of Tougaloo College.

The other two candidates, former president of Arkansas Baptist College Calvin McFadden and current chancellor of the Southern University Law Center John Pierre, were interviewed on Tuesday, Feb. 6.

“It’s all about a spirit of excellence and just making sure that I work with the team that’s here, the team that’s in place who’s already ready to do some great things and already working hard,” Walters said.

The three semi-finalists will be submitted to the president by Feb. 23, and the Board of Supervisors will discuss the candidates during their board meeting in March.

University leaders said every candidate is well deserving and the decision will not be easy.
