Southern University, LSU partner for conference about how slavery shaped Louisiana history

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — Southern University and LSU have been continuously creating a long-lasting partnership. The “Navigating the Storms of Slavery: Restore, Reflect, Reclaim” conference is for three days and it discusses the importance of slavery, specifically in Louisiana.

“This is the only city in the United States that has two land grant universities in the same city. And it’s a tremendous opportunity for the betterment of the people of Louisiana, for Southern and LSU to partner together,” said Roy Haggerty, executive vice president and provost at LSU.

With the football game between Southern University and LSU happening for the first time in 2022, presidents of both schools came together to create the A&M Agenda. It is a five-year plan to continue creating events together, just like the inaugural conference.

Dr. Joyce Marie Jackson, coordinator for the event, is excited that the two universities are stepping up, and continuing their progress of working together.

“I wanted to see the progress and the collaborative effort of both schools coming together on a much larger level and redoing research, you know, and working on grants together,” said Dr. Jackson.

Their main goal for the three-day conference is to enlighten those in the community, and across the nation, about slavery and just how important the history is, especially to Louisiana and Baton Rouge. By reaching out to the community, and providing the proper knowledge, it will create long lasting ties for both schools.

“What we want the attendees to learn about the truth with respect to slavery, the impact on this country, and how we can go forward in terms of reconciling differences,” said John Pierre, chancellor of Southern University Law Center.

Dr. Jackson also hopes that the conference inspires and reaches the youth in the community, making sure that they know the importance of African American history, and to never forget the past. The last day for the conference is scheduled for Saturday.
