Southern University releases semi-finalists for Baton Rouge Chancellor position, asks for community input for in-person interviews
BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) – Southern University has officially announced semi-finalists for the Baton Rouge Campus Chancellor.
During today’s special committee meeting, Calvin Jerome McFadden, former president of Arkansas Baptist College, John Pierre, Chancellor at Southern University Law Center and Carmen Walters, former president of Tougaloo College in Mississippi were chosen as finalists.
Committee members said the semi-finalists stood out and represented very important qualities.
“So everyone, they all came from diverse backgrounds. But one thing in common is the passion that they had for lasting change, to take this university to the next level, to bring innovation, to grow the student body, to bring diversity among faculty, and to further strengthen the university’s financial holdings. So these were all very positive things that made us feel good about these three candidates,” said the chair of the Chancellor Search Committee at Southern University Revathi Hines.

Brandon Horne is also one of the members and serves as the Student Government Association president, he said the committee had many qualities in mind when choosing the three candidates
“The biggest thing that the committee and are looking for is someone who will come in, make their biggest impact, and be accessible to students as well as faculty and just our brand of being at Southern…,” he said.
Now committee members encourage the community to attend the in-person interview sessions of the semi-finalists on Tuesday and Wednesday.
“We want to make this open to everyone and we want to make sure that we are including the entire community in this process. So come on, talk to the candidates, see what we have and we look forward to next week,” Hines said.

According to Southern University, the schedule of the interviews is as follows, and will be at the Valdry Center for Philanthropy in Baton Rouge:
Tuesday, Feb. 6
Calvin McFadden, Ph.D. – 9:30-10:30 a.m.
John Pierre, J.D. – 1-2 p.m.
Wednesday, Feb. 7
Carmen Walters, Ph.D. – 9:30-10:30 a.m.
Interviews will also be live-streamed at sus.edu for those who can not attend in person.
