Southern Virginia women’s basketball prepares for the NCAA Division III Tournament

BUENA VISTA, Va. (WFXR) — For the second time in three seasons, the Southern Virginia Knights (SVU) women’s basketball team is in the NCAA Division III tournament for the second time in program history.

The Knights will be making the trip to Center Valley, Pennsylvania to play host school DeSales University on Friday, March 1 at 7 p.m. in the first round. SVU is coming off of a dominating USA South tournament title run where they won their 3 tournament games by an average score of 41 points per game. Now they look to take their hot streak into the NCAA Tournament.

“Yeah, something that we planned for since last year when we lost in our conference semi-finals we made a commitment with each other to get back to the national tournament and it’s nice to see that goal come to reality this year,” said Southern Virginia head coach Lynette Schroeder.

For the Southern Virginia Knights women’s basketball team, the pain of losing early in last year’s USA South tournament stayed with the team through this season. SVU used it as motivation for a comeback season in winning the USA South tournament and earning a spot in the NCAA tournament.

“I think like it was a little tough ending that way, but I think we knew what we needed to work on. We had a good group of girls come in this year to help us out and I think that yeah we just worked on what we needed to this over the summer and we came back stronger this year and yeah we put it all together and we start every day,” said Southern Virginia senior guard Emma Camden. “I do think that’s what motivated us to get to where we are today like we don’t like what happened last season so we were charged to make sure that it happened again and it’s really cool to see our hard work paid off and to get the tournament,” said Southern Virginia junior Addison Newman.

With a spot in the NCAA tournament in their hands, the Knights feel they can make a deep run if they play the way they have all season.
