A Latin-themed dinner reception, Brazilian and Spanish guitar performers; traditional Hispanic meals and Mexican folk-art projects all await at the two-day Southport Plein Air Festival. Southport Plein Air Festival

The two-day event, host by Up Your Arts in partnership with the City of Southport, will be held Friday, May 13 and Saturday, May 14. A “meet the artists” dinner reception will be held Friday, 4-6 p.m. at the Southport Community Building, 223 E. Bay St. A Latin American meal will be served (carnitas and rice, one glass of beer or wine), accompanied by jazz pianist David Pope. The cost is $15. The Back Porch Rockers, popular six-piece accomplished band, will perform classic rock to beach music following the reception from 6-8 p.m. on the lawn of Southport's Community Building.

Saturday's activities will be in Keziah Memorial Park on 113 W. Moore St. until 3 p.m. and free. Children will be participating in Kids Plein Air from 10 a.m.-2 p.m., Mexican folk art crafts, paints and other supplies provided. There's also Pollock in the Park, a mural extravaganza led by Ginger Hedblom of 2nd Story Art and Music Studio.

Wilmington’s Tacqueria La Vallita mobile food truck serving up specialty tacos, tortes, sopes and quesadillas. Oak Island’s Lil & John’s Sweetreat Homemade Ice Cream will also be on site, 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Also Hispanic-themed live performances will include Brazilian jazz guitarist Raphael Namé from 10 a.m.-noon, The Tedward Brothers trio noon-1 p.m. and Spanish guitarist Perry Smith with percussion accompaniment from 1-3 p.m. The Wet Paint Sale opens to the public 4-6 p.m.

Traveling solo or with his band around the Southeast region of the United States since the age of 16, McQuay is a bluesman, who sings from the heart. An incomparable harmonicist, a guitarist, and a master interpreter of modern American roots music, McQuay will perform at 7 p.m. Friday, May 13 at Ocean Crest Pier, 1409 E. Beach Drive, Oak Island.

Opening day for Shallotte Farmers Market

The Shallotte Farmers Market, aka Market on Mulberry, will open for the season Saturday, May 14. Local vendors offering baked goods, arts & crafts, flowers, eggs, herbs, vegetables and fruits, honey, poultry, beans, plants and wine. The market goes from 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Saturdays through Aug. 6 and is located at 23 Mulberry St. Call for details at 910-754-4032.

‘Meet the artist’: Chris Fowler

An artist reception for Chris Fowler's “Engrossed,” a series of mixed media works by Chris Fowler, that explores the fleeting nature of dreams and memories will be held 6-8 p.m. Thursday, May 12 at the Leland Cultural Arts Center, 1212 Magnolia Village Way, Leland. Details: 910-385-9891.

Movies in the park

Enjoy family movies under the night sky in Leland while watching the movie, “Luca.” Set on the Italian Riviera, the film centers on Luca Paguro, a young sea monster boy with the ability to assume human form while on land, who explores the town of Portorosso with his new best friend, Alberto Scorfano, experiencing a life-changing summer adventure.

Bring a blanket or chairs and a picnic. The food truck T'Geaux Boys will be on site. Alcohol or pets are not allowed. The movie will be shown at 8:30 p.m. Saturday, May 14 at Founders Park, 113 Town Hall Drive, Leland. In case of inclement weather, the movie may be canceled.

Coastal Home & Lifestyle Showcase

The second annual Coastal Home & Lifestyle Showcase, an outdoor show, will highlight businesses that specialize in home maintenance and repair, outdoor living and supporting a healthy and active lifestyle. The showcase will also feature a live performance by the 52nd Street Band, and various business demonstrations. Food vendors will also be onsite.

Admission is free. The event will be held 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, May 14 at Middleton Park Extension, 4610 E. Dolphin Drive, Oak Island. Details: 910-457-6964.

Aircraft fly-in and car show

EAA Chapter 939 presents Wings & Wheels, aircraft fly-in and car show (classic and antique) on Saturday from 9 a.m.-noon. Open to all cars and trucks with a $15 registration. There's also a $6 pancake breakfast from 8:30-11 a.m. and hot dogs and hamburgers from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. The event will be from 8:30 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Cape Fear Regional Jetport, 4019 Long Beach Road, S.E., Oak Island.
