Southridge High golfer is Class 3A girls Washington state champion

Southridge senior Jillian Hui finished her high school golfing career on Wednesday by winning the Class 3A girls state tournament in Lacey.

Hui, who will compete next year with the Boise State University women’s golf team, shot rounds of 70 and 73, for a two-round total of 143. That was a 1-under par total.

The Suns standout had a 4-stroke lead after Tuesday’s first round at Hawks Prairie Golf Course (Woodlands) in Lacey.

Runnerup Nicole Koons of Eastside Catholic was only able to cut into Hui’s lead by a stroke on Wednesday, finishing with a 146.

Hermiston’s Nadalie Cannell finished tied for 19th, shooting 82-81 for a 19-over-par 163.

Pasco senior Jillian Breedlove, who will play next season at Austin Peay University, placed seventh in the 4A girls state tournament at Indian Canyon Golf Course in Spokane.

Breedlove shot rounds of 73 and 72 for a 1-over-par 145.

Chiawana’s Joel Martinez finished tied for 12th in the 4A boys state tournament at Qualchan Golf Course in Spokane.

Martinez shot 75-74 for a 5-over 149 total. Richland’s Davis Sheets tied for 22nd, going 78 and 73 for a 151 total — 7 over par.

Baseball

Ephrata might be the place to go this coming weekend for area high school baseball fans, as Tri-Cities Prep, Liberty Christian and DeSales all advanced to the state semifinals after winning quarterfinal games last weekend.

In the 2B tournament, Prep beat EWAC East rival River View 2-0 in Saturday’s quarterfinal matchup in Yakima. River View advanced out of the first round when it beat Tonasket 2-1 earlier in the day.

Prep, which is seeded No. 4 in the tournament, will take on top seed Brewster at 7 p.m. Friday in one semifinal. The other semi pits No. 11 Adna against No. 2 Toutle Lake at 4 p.m.

In the 1B tournament last Saturday, top-seed and host DeSales pounded No. 9 Wilbur-Creston-Keller 13-1 in the quarterfinals.

Meanwhile, at LaPierre Field in Kennewick, No. 2 Liberty Christian stopped Mossyrock 2-0 in another quarterfinal.

So here’s the 1B semifinal pairings for Friday in Ephrata: At 10 a.m., No. 3 Mount Vernon Christian meets Liberty Christian; at 1 p.m., DeSales takes on No. 5 Naselle.

The remaining teams from the region didn’t fare as well.

In the 4A tournament, both Richland and Kamiakin got past their first-round opponents.

Host Richland, seeded third, beat No. 14 Mount Si 3-0. But in the quarterfinals, the Bombers fell to No. 11 Sumner 8-4 to see their season end.

No. 8 Kamiakin shut down No. 9 Camas 5-0, but the Braves then lost at No. 1 Eastlake 5-0 themselves.

No. 15 Hanford just missed beating No. 2 Puyallup, falling 6-5 in the opening round.

In the 3A state tournament, top-seeded Kennewick lost at Roy Johnson Field in its opener. No. 16 Eastside Catholic edged the host Lions 2-1.

Meanwhile, No. 11 Southridge fell No. 6 Edmonds-Woodway 7-4 in the first round.

Both Grandview and College Place also dropped first-round contests.

No. 2 Tumwater beat No. 15 Grandview 8-2; while No. 13 College Place fell 11-5 top No. 4 Montesano.

College baseball

The NAIA baseball World Series begins Friday and runs through June 2 in Lewiston, Idaho.

The host Lewis-Clark State College Warriors (33-16) are once again in the tournament. They’re seeded 9th and open play at 7:30 p.m. Friday against No. 8 Indiana Wesleyan.

LCSC has two former CBC players on its roster: sophomore infielder Isaac Haws, and sophomore pitcher Mason Hymer.

Haws has started in 28 games, is batting .259, and driven in 11 runs. Hymer has not played this season.

Meanwhile sophomore infielder Nick Grade (Southridge/CBC) will be playing in the tournament for Bellevue University out of Nebraska.

The Bruins are 48-8 and seeded fifth and play No. 4 William Carey of Mississippi at 3:05 p.m. Friday.

Grade is 62 for 171 at the plate, hitting .363. He’s also hit 15 home runs and has 61 RBIs.

Motorsports

Hermiston Raceway is expected to get busy this coming Saturday, May 27, as the Duel in the Desert 75 will be run.

Track officials are expecting 17 drivers to compete in the Powercity Prolates 75-lap main event.

The winner will get $5,000, so as you can imagine there are some talented Northwest drivers competing.

Among those drivers are Naches’ Jason Jefferson, West Richland’s Trace Thompson, Pasco’s Mike Zamora, and East Wenatchee veteran Garrett Evans.

There will also be 14 drivers in the Hobby Stocks division, and another 15 Legends drivers.

Other divisions will be Bombers, Street Stocks and Hornets.

Boys soccer

None of the region’s boys soccer teams got past the quarterfinals last weekend in the state high school tournament, ending the season for all.

In the 4A tournament, No. 3 Pasco lost 2-0 to No. 14 Sumner, while No. 6 Skyline topped No. 11 Chiawana 3-1. Both of those matches were in the first round.

Southridge opened the 3A tournament by beating No. 5 Silas 2-1 in a shootout last Friday. But the No. 12 Suns lost 4-0 to No. 4 Edmonds-Woodway 3-0 the next night in the quarterfinals.

Connell may have had the best week of the local teams.

The Eagles were seeded 17th in the 1A tournament, and they opened on Wednesday with a 2-1 win over No. 16 Chelan.

Then they edged No. 1 Quincy 3-2 on Friday in the second round, before falling 1-0 to No. 9 Overlake in the quarterfinals on Saturday night.

In the same tournament, No. 6 Wahluke opened with a 4-3 win on Friday over No. 11 Columbia of White Salmon. But the Warriors lost 2-0 in the quarterfinals Saturday to No. 3 seed Seattle Academy.

No. 10 Royal fell 3-1 to No. 7 Seton Catholic in the first round on Friday.

NWAC softball

Columbia Basin College’s softball team finished the season last weekend by going 2-2 in the NWAC Championship tournament in Portland.

The Hawks opened tournament play by beating Everett 8-0. Harley Raymond went 2 for 3 for CBC with two doubles and 4 RBIs; while Madi Olson was 2 for 3, scoring two runs and driving in two more.

Eventual tournament champion Southwestern Oregon then beat the Hawks 4-0, forcing the Hawks into the losers bracket.

CBC pitcher Macao Jackson struck out 8 batters and gave up just one earned run over 7 innings.

On Friday, the Hawks bounced back in the losers bracket by beating Douglas 11-3. Raymond was 3 for 3 with two home runs, scoring three runs and driving in four.

Jackson was 2 for 3 with a homer, scoring two runs and driving in three more.

But later in the day, the Hawks ran out of gas by losing 8-3 to Mt. Hood. Ashlynn Nixon led the way for CBC with a hit, scoring a run and driving in another.
