The Southside Animal Hospital in San Angelo will no longer be open overnight, according to a release.

The hospital at 59 E. Avenue L was the only doctor-staffed overnight animal hospital in town.

Starting October 1, those services will no longer be available.

"It is with heavy hearts that we are announcing that we have found it necessary to change our hours due to lack of veterinarian staff, and we will no longer be open overnight," the release stated.

A tech at the veterinary clinic said there will still be staff on-site overnight to watch patients, but no doctors will be available anymore for surgeries or emergency procedures starting Oct. 1.

"We will continue to provide overnight hospitalization services with a member of our technical staff on-site for patient monitoring and treatments," the release stated. "A veterinarian will be available via phone should changes in condition occur for a hospitalized patient. We will also be providing triage services to help you determine if your pet is experiencing an emergency that requires immediate care."

They will have same-day appointments available for sick patients.

"We are doing all that we can do increase capacity during weekday and weekend hours in order to minimize the impact of changes in availability of after-hours care," according to the release. "We have enjoyed serving our community as a 24-hour clinic for many years and it is our hope that we might be able to accommodate that schedule again one day."

The new hours starting Oct. 1 will be Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m.-6 p.m. and Friday through Saturday 8 a.m.-9 p.m.

"Please know that this decision was not made hastily or without significant thought, planning and attempts to bring on additional veterinarians to provide care for your pets."

The following clinics provide some level of after-hours urgent/emergency care. Call ahead to check availability of care.
