Southside to hold public meeting Oct. 13 on city's strategic plan

The next step in the City of Southside's strategic plan for community development is a public meeting, slated for 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Oct. 13, to allow people to see what city leaders what's included in the "Southside NEXT."

According to Mayor Dana Snyder and the council, the "action-oriented city-wide planning process" is designed to make Southside a better place to live, work and play. It was developed with citizen input, Snyder said, and it will address issues including land use, transportation, housing, recreation, and economic development.

When completed, the process will be supplemented by a Corridor Overlay Zoning update along Alabama Highway 77, according to city leaders.

The open house event Oct. 13 will give the public a chance to see a draft version of the plan, including topics such as a potential town center, future land use and road connectivity/improvements. The planning consultancy team at Goodwyn Mills Cawood will be at the meeting to talk about the plan. People may come at anytime between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. to see the plan.

"The Southside NEXT planning process has provided the community with multiple opportunities to guide the future of land use and development goals in order to meet the needs and seize the opportunities of our quickly growing city," Snyder said in a news release.

More than 1,000 residents have contributed to the process of developing the plan through in-person meetings and online engagement, she explained.

This meeting will be another opportunity, Snyder said, for people to have their voices heard. She said the city wants to involve as many people as possible in the process, and invited everyone to see the "visionary work done so far in planning a more prosperous and vibrant future for our fair city."

“We are looking forward to presenting the draft plan to the public as this important process nears completion," Snyder said. "Community input drives the overall development of the comprehensive plan and is vital to the success of the plan. This is a great chance for the community to share their values, vision, and hopes for the future of Southside. We are excited to hear from you, the citizens, so that we can work together as a team to secure a brighter future for Southside."
