Southside team competes in national quiz bowl tournament in Atlanta

Southside High School was among 10 teams from Alabama, and 304 from 40 states nationwide, who took part in the National Academic Quiz Tournaments 2023 national championship tournament held May 26-28 in the Atlanta Marriott Marquis.

Its team finished the tournament with a 3-7 record, defeating the B team from Adlai E. Stevenson High of Lincolnshire, Illinois, 175-45; James Island Charter High of Charleston, South Carolina, 185-140; and the B team from Eastside High in Covington, Georgia, 190-25.

Southside lost to the A team from Henderson High in West Chester, Pennsylvania, 245-195; North Babylon (New York) High, 180-145; the Wise team from Central High in Norton, Virginia, 255-155; Milton (Georgia) High, 145-100; the A team from White Station High in Memphis, Tennessee, 400-40; the B team from Alabama’s Hoover High, 310-120; and Jordan High from Fulshear, Texas, 365-60.

Team members are captain Ian Lang, Jeff Battles, Ariq Chandra, Caleb Flemons, Tyler Howard and Grant Vice. All are seniors except Vice, who is a sophomore. Michelle Sanders is the coach.

The highest finishing Alabama entry was Hoover’s A team, which tied for 21st place. Alabama Cyber Tech from Huntsville tied for 65th. Also competing were Baker High from Mobile, West Point from Cullman, Grissom from Huntsville, Athens, LAMP from Montgomery and Houston Academy from Dothan.

The tournament champion was the A squad from Barrington High in Illinois.

Quiz bowl matches teams of four students who use buzzers to answer questions dealing with a wide range of topics, including current events, geography, history, literature, math, mythology, popular culture, science, social science and sports.
