Private 8 Cross Country

The layoff following the Hurricane Ian’s destruction didn’t appear to affect runners at the Private 8 Cross Country Championship at Bishop Verot Catholic High School on Saturday morning.

Both the girls’ champion, Bishop Verot sophomore Mackenzie De Lisle, and the boys’ champion, Community School senior Sergi Guzman, posted personal-best times in their respective winning runs.

The Seahawks took first place for the girls, while the Vikings came out on top among the boys.

De Lisle, who got out to a strong early lead that she would never relinquish, said that competing on her home course at Verot provided a big boost.

Sergi Guzman of Community School of Naples leads the Private 8 cross country running race at Bishop Verot on Saturday, Oct. 15, 2022. He would go on to win.

“I ran my heart out pretty much,” De Lisle said. “I just kept pushing on the pace, so I was really happy with it.”

For Guzman, winning the event and running under 16 minutes for the first time were major milestones.

“It feels pretty good,” he said. “I mean, last year I was like tenth on my own team.”

Guzman credited hard work he put in over the summer and support from his teammates for his improved results this year.

“I wasn’t expecting to do that good, but everything just happens for a reason,” he said.

Both champions mentioned the challenge of staying in good condition following the storm.

“It was like mentally and physically tough because I had to try and get my runs while I was running around the destruction of the hurricane,” De Lisle said. “It was really unfortunate.”

Guzman had to change his approach for the past two weeks.

“It was definitely harder,” Guzman said. “A lot of the streets were dirty – it’s hard to run on those. It’s a lot of treadmill running, not as much speed work, so just making sure I got miles in where I could.”

The fierce competition at the Private 8 meet gave the runners an important lift heading into districts.

“It kind of boosted my confidence a little bit, like I’m a strong runner,” De Lisle said. “I’m someone to contend with, so, going into postseason, I’m really excited with this race, and it really is fun.”

CCAC Swimming and Diving

Barron Collier took home The Log as the overall school champion for the first time in four years.

The Cougars finished second in the boys and girls events, edged out by Gulf Coast and Naples who earned first respectively in each competition, but had the most points combined after scoring 1,030 Thursday.

“When we didn’t win either one, I still knew because we were so high up there we had a chance,” said boys head coach Matt Nelson. “And when they announced it, it was just amazing.”

Barron won eight of the 24 events in the championship meet.

“CCAC, The Log, it’s bigger than states for us,” said Catie Laur. “Coming out with a win, especially my senior year, couldn’t ask for more.”

Laur was a big part of Barron Collier’s win, medaling in four events and earning first in the 100 fly (59.18). Carsyn Ide tacked on a gold for the girls in the 100 back (1:01.31).

On the boys side, Charlie Wu added two wins in the 100 breaststroke (1:06.42), and an impressive 21.8-second lead in the 500 free (5:27.58). Emil Daniyar added a gold to the Cougars’ winning effort in the 200 IM (2:10.64) with teammate Gavin Daley finishing closely behind (2:12.42).

Thor Warnken also medaled in four events for Barron Collier and won the 100 Free (50.30).

“It feels really good, because I’m a junior and this is the first time I won The Log,” Warnken said. “I didn’t know what to expect, but I left it all in the pool and it felt good.”

The conference win is no small feat, considering the strength of the schools in Collier county.

“It always feels good to do well in Naples,” Nelson said. “We have a lot of good teams here. Naples is a class act, they’re going to go on and do great things in 3A, and Gulf Coast in 4A.”

Gulf Coast came in second in the team results after earning first in the boys’ category and second in girls. Carinn Bethea had a strong showing, medaling in four events and winning two. Bethea earned gold in the 500 free (5:12.67) and the 200 free (2:12.61).

For the boys, Jack Stokvis also medalled four times, with two wins in the 50 free (21.57)  and the 100 fly (51.07). Sofia Licausi earned gold in the 1m dive (407.35), while Clay Shephard (335.45) won the same event on the boys' side.

Naples rounded out the podium after coming in first in the girls’ category and third in the boys. Sabyne Brisson earned four medals for the girls, including gold in both the 200 IM (2:12.61) and the 100 Breaststroke (1:07.93). Havana Layton also had four medals, with wins in the 50 Free (25.20) and the 100 Free (53.79). Lucas Edwards picked up a win in the 200 free (1:51.88) along with his four medals for the boys.

CCAC Cross Country

Sometimes, you eat the bear, sometimes the bear eats you.

The Palmetto Ridge Bears squeaked by Naples to take the Collier County Athletic Conference cross country championship Thursdsay. Senior star Bernardo Barnhart took his third consecutive conference title on his home course to lead the Bears who packed three runners in the top 10.

Barnhart led from the gun with Gulf Coast junior William Montanye hot on his tail.  Behind him another Bears senior Chris Amador made his way through the trailing pack into third.  After the mile, Barnhart put in a surge to seal the win.

The Naples pack led by junior Hector Toro who took fourth also grabbed fifth, sixth, and seventh places but their fifth man finished back in 19th giving Palmetto Ridge a victory by two points.

The girl’s race opened the meet with little doubt about who would win. Naples sophomore Tara Watkins was looking to defend her title. She took the lead from the gun and never looked back as she made her way through the twisty and winding course.

“I like to go out fast," Watkins said. "I like to go out ahead. I just personally run better that way.  So my plan was just to go out ahead, run the race and try to get the cart.”

The cart being the lead cart which Watkins nearly managed to do.

Behind her the Golden Eagles managed to put all seven of its runners in the top 10 to easily defeat Gulf Coast to defend their team title.

Naples is now eyeing its march to State.

“I’m excited, we’re ready for it.  We were training all summer. I think we’re good,” said Naples third-place finisher Annabelle Daley.

Volleyball

Canterbury 3, Estero 0: After a long layoff without volleyball, Canterbury looked like they were in midseason form Thursday night, for the most part.

Despite playing without starting libero and Boston College commit Chandler Swanson, Canterbury held on against Estero, winning 26-24, 25-12, 25-13.

The Cougars survived a scare in the first set, trailing 24-23 before winning 26-24.

“I think they did a good job of coming out and playing with a lot of fire early on,” Canterbury coach Charlie Castillo said. “We kind of sat back and wanted to let the girls go out and take control and ownership of the beginning of the game, and they know they came out a little bit slow. We really had to step up and turn it on in the second set, and they did a pretty good job at doing that.”

Wittenburg commit Kayla Huether finished with a game-high 10 aces, while adding 4 kills and 4 blocks, while North Florida commit Madison Hammermeister had 10 kills, 8 digs, and 3 blocks. Olivia Hoy added 6 kills and 4 blocks up front for the Cougars (12-4).

“We’ve been seeing Kayla do that since she was about 11 years old,” Castillo said of Huether. “It’s nothing new to us. We know she can serve back there, and she can fire them off like that in any given moment, but tonight was a special night for her, and it was awesome to see her have a night like that, especially in her senior year.”

Thursday night was the first time John Ban’s team saw a volleyball court in the month of October, as his team has been unable to practice in their own gym.

“I thought the girls played great tonight,” Ban said. “We played a team that has four college players next year, and our kids are mostly all juniors. Eight of our players, that are starters, are all juniors. This is a young team, and we’re trying to build the steps to next year, where we’re going to be very competitive.”

Canterbury will take on Cardinal Mooney Friday afternoon before district play, while Estero will head straight into district play against Clewiston next Tuesday.

Marco Island 3, Donahue Academy 0:  Marco Island won in straight sets 25-8, 25-4, 25-10 behind Medney Garraux's 11 kills, 4 digs, 6 aces, and 1 block. Madison Stolinas tallied 4 kills, 20 assists, 6 aces, 5 digs while teammate Jayden Ragen notched 5 kills, 6 aces, and 4 digs. Rylee Howard tacked on 10 kills, 3 digs, 2 aces, and 1 block in the winning effort.

St. John Neumann def. FBA:  Jason Neal fired a team-low 36 for the Celtics in the win, while Lucas Lye finished right behind with a 37 for the Lions. FBA's Ryan Kriz tallied a 39, along with Celtic Connor Shea.

WEDNESDAY

Volleyball

Barron Collier 3, Gulf Coast 2: The Barron Collier volleyball program has managed to win just one set inside the Shark Tank over the past two seasons.

Wednesday night, that skid stopped.

The Cougars (13-5) made a statement on the road, coming back down two sets to win 23-25, 19-25, 25-20, 25-18, 15-10 to capture the inaugural CCAC Championship.

“We trained for this,” Barron Collier coach Yamil Del Valle said. “This is when the season starts for us right now. Now is when everything counts, and that’s what we’re focused on. We tried to compete in the regular season with tough teams to make us better, and that’s what we tried to do even with the hurricane, we lost our big tournament (Battle at the Beach) in Venice.

“Through everything, we competed hard in the Miami tournament (Warrior Invitational). It’s incredible where we are right now.”

Gulf Coast raced out to a quick 2-0 set lead, putting longtime coach Christy Wright in position to score her 400th career win. Barron Collier had other plans. In the third set, Barron pulled away late after being tied 19-19, winning 25-20. From there, the Cougars wore down Gulf Coast’s defense, as the Sharks are now 0-3 this season in five-set contests.

Barron Collier played Gulf Coast for the 2022 Collier County Athletic Conference title on Wednesday. The Cougars came back from two games down to beat the Sharks and win the crown 3-2.
Barron Collier played Gulf Coast for the 2022 Collier County Athletic Conference title on Wednesday. The Cougars came back from two games down to beat the Sharks and win the crown 3-2.

Berry commit Keira Kruk was a big reason why the Cougars marched back, as were Kendra Pruitt and Ava Zehnder. Kruk had 20 kills, 15 digs, 2 blocks, and 2 aces, while Pruitt had 12 kills 25 digs, 3 aces, and 2 blocks. Zehnder had 47 assists, 11 digs, and a kill as she eases back into action returning from an injury that sidelined her up until Oct. 7, where she returned at the Warrior Invitational in Miami.

“I gotta be honest, we have our main setter back,” Del Valle said of Zehnder. “Not taking the respect from the other two setters that stepped up for the team (Jillian Goetz and Nora Atkins) and did their job, but just having her back, the chemistry is different. Her leadership inside the court helps us move forward with everything we want.

“We’re going to get better. We’re going to keep getting better. That’s my job, to keep making them better. In situations like this, we grow as a team, I grow as a coach, and we’re going to get better. Our main goal is to focus on district, then after that, the show starts. We’ve got to train for that.”

Also for the Cougars, Gardner-Webb commit Scarlett Martz added 10 kills and a pair of blocks, while Ashley Giraldo had 24 digs.

Barron Collier remains in the catbird seat to win the Class 5A-District 12 title, while Gulf Coast’s path will likely run through Venice on the road next week.

MONDAY

Girls Golf

The Gulf Coast girls golf team viewed Monday’s Collier County Athletic Conference meet as preparation for the upcoming district meet.

And from the way things looked at Vineyards Country Club, the rest of the district field will have to be well prepared for the Sharks.

Buoyed by Sara Vitasek and Pearl Jenkins, the Sharks won the CCAC crown, beating out Barron Collier by 64 strokes in a dominant performance.

Honing up for the district tournament in two weeks, Vitasek shot a 1-under par 71 at the 5,396-yard Vineyards North Course layout. Pearl Jenkins, who repeated as CCAC runner-up, carded a 75 for Gulf Coast.

And the Sharks’ coach thought it was great with the area recovering from Hurricane Ian.

“We did really well today,” said Gulf Coast coach Alexandra Falls. “We were glad to get it in after the hurricane. The course today was very soft, so that made it challenging. The ball doesn’t go as far, so it presented tougher lies for all the players here.”

The Sharks also had Payton Balliet come in with an 83 and Madison Roach with an 85.

“We’re getting ready for postseason play. We’ve hit a few bumps in the road during the season,” Falls said. “Our goal is to hit 300 or under in every tournament we play. So getting to that number is our definite goal.”

Vitasek’s round included a 34 on the second nine, with birdies at Nos. 11, 16 and 17.

“There were a few more putts I could’ve made, but I was satisfied overall with my play,” Vitasek said. “The 11th hole was great after I made a long birdie putt, especially after a rocky start on the front nine. I’m hitting the driver pretty well, and that helps on holes with these yardages. I could definitely work on the wedges a little more, to stick it closer to the hole.”

For Barron Collier, Brandi Singleton shot a 78 for third individually. Naples’ Eliza Kodak, the defending CCAC champ, had an 80 for fourth.

Among the CCAC schools, Immokalee, Gulf Coast and Palmetto Ridge play in two weeks in the District 3A-12 tournament at Waterford Golf Course in Venice. BC, Naples, Lely and Golden Gate meanwhile will play in the District 2A-14 meet at Majestic Golf Course in Lehigh Acres.
