Cross Country

The cream of the Lee County cross country crop rose to the top with Cape Coral’s Declan Ziomek and Ava Povich of ECS grabbing the individual titles at the 43rd annual Fort Myers Invitational Saturday night.

The boys went off first with Ziomek and teammate William Canales taking the early pace out hard. A little more than a mile in and the race was down to four boys with Ziomek applying the pressure.

“I was feeling it after the first mile but I knew I had two guys on my back and it helped me a lot,” said Ziomek.

Those two guys were defending champion Bernardo Barnhart of Palmetto Ridge and the surprise of the season, Sergei Guzman of CSN. Those two finished second and third respectively. Barnhart helped his team to a third-place finish while Ziomek’s squad finished second.

The Fort Myers boys packed three runners in the top ten to ease past Cape Coral for the team title.

“We’re really in the meat of our training so we’re really tired but we still want to perform well at our home meet,” said Green Wave head coach Yancey Palmer.

The girls' race was something of a hot mess. Because of the overnight rains, the course was changed to protect the soccer fields at Kelly Road and with the help of some over helpful spectators, some of the girls were sent off course.

Ava Povich saw it when her county rival Bishop Verot’s Mackenzie DeLisle made a wrong turn right before the first mile.

“Mackenzie took it out hard and when I saw her go off course I pushed the pace and kept on pushing,” said Povich.

DeLisle never fully recovered from the miscue and had to fight to finish third ahead of Naples Tara Watkins.

The course confusion also cost Verot several points and a shot at a top-five finish when their number three runner accidentally cut the course.

The girl’s team title went to Lourdes of Miami with Fort Myers scoring the finish by an area team with third.
