Volleyball

Gulf Coast 3, Barron Collier 0

Gulf Coast had been chomping at the bit all summer to send a clear message early on in the season.

The Sharks, despite beating Barron Collier in both meetings last season, missed out on the Class 7A playoffs, while the Cougars went to a Final Four in Class 5A.

Inside a loud, raucous gym that topped out at 110.9 decibels Tuesday night, the Sharks extended their win streak in the series to three games, and came away with a convincing win over rival Barron Collier (26-24, 25-19, 25-14).

RANKINGS: Who's leading The News-Press/Naples Daily News Football and Volleyball rankings after Week 1?

Aisha Keric provided multiple key sparks for Gulf Coast (2-0) in the early going, including a kill to give the Sharks a 25-24 lead in the opening set. The junior finished with 16 kills and 12 assists on the night.

Gulf Coast's student section during the FHSAA volleyball match between Barron Collier and Gulf Coast, Tuesday, Aug. 30, 2022, at Gulf Coast High School in Naples, Fla. Gulf Coast defeated Barron Collier in 3-0 sets.

“It’s definitely that faith in your team and the belief that you can do it,” Keric said. “The atmosphere just helps. It just gives you confidence. You know all of the different people in the crowd have your back, and they are here to support you, so I think that’s also a big deal.

“I think it’s a good mark in the season. We have a lot to work on, but it’s our second year as a team together, so I think we’re able to mesh really well, and I think that we can be very successful if we keep working. It’s definitely a win, but we have to keep working and fix a few things.”

Barron Collier put the pressure on Gulf Coast early, jumping out to a quick lead before the two teams went back and forth in the opening set. After the Cougars (2-1) fell in the first set, it was almost all Gulf Coast the rest of the way. Keira Kruk finished with a team-high nine kills, while First Baptist transfer Kendra Pruitt added five. Ashley Giraldo led the way with 20 digs, and Jillian Goetz pitched in with 18 assists.

Lily Lucas scored 18 of Gulf Coast’s 76 points on serves, clipping at astronomically high 69.2 percent, which is something that Gulf Coast coach Christy Wright hasn’t seen often, if at all.

“Obviously Aisha hit well,” Wright said. “She’s a great player. None of that is surprising to me. Lily served so well. She had eight aces, and every single one of her serves put them out of system. He serves were so tough all night. We scored points 69 percent of the time when she served. That’s ridiculous. That never happens. That’s such a high number. Casey (Williams) served well too. When you have that many points on one person’s serve, especially when she’s one of our best hitters, that’s a good thing.

“Marina (Rau) set really well tonight, as did Aisha. Kate Drasba’s passing was on point all night. I don’t think people realize how hard it is to pass like that. She passed so well. Our passing was really good.”

The Sharks (2-0) will travel to the east coast on Friday to take on Cardinal Gibbons, a program that has won 20 state championships, before heading down to Key West to play the Conchs. Barron Collier has a week before hosting CSN and Canterbury.
