SATURDAY

Swimming

The Cape Coral High boys swimming team has gone through a lot of chaos in the wake of Hurricane Ian and has gone from swimming pool to swimming pool, fitting in practices and classes, and in general trying to restore order to an interrupted season.

But in Saturday’s District 3A-9 meet in Naples, everything all came together for the Seahawks boys.

The Seahawks, winning only one event, were able to put together a lot of team points and beat out runner-up Riverdale by 45 points in the district meet at the Norris Aquatics Center in Naples.

And considering of the stress and headaches post-Ian, Cape Coral coach Dianne Kimble was glad to see her team go through all the difficulty of hoisting the district title trophy.

“It has been a rough journey for all of us,” Kimble said. “The biggest thing for us was just getting everyone together in the same pool. Just getting all the kids together to compete was the biggest point in our day. I’m looking forward to the regional and seeing what they can do, and then maybe going on to state.”

The top two individuals in each event and also 18 at-large qualifiers will now move on to the region meet next Saturday in Clearwater.

Kimble was especially pleased with the Seahawks’ showings in the freestyle, medley and breaststroke events.

“I really think we need to work more on our sprint events and get the sprint game back,” Kimble said. “But everything went well today. We want to work on our explosiveness and starts and turns. Taking three weeks off, I guess you have to shake the cobwebs off, and we did that today.”

Cape only won one event: Hayden Tedhams in the 500 freestyle. Yet the Seahawks had at least one finisher in every event but one.

Cape Coral was second in the 200 medley relay, 200 freestyle and the 200 individual medley.

Other winners in the boys meet were Lucas Edwards of Naples in the 100 and 200 freestyles, Jonathan Grant of Riverdale in the 100 breaststroke and 200 individual medley, Jacob Terry in the 50 freestyle, William Wright of Riverdale in the 100 backstroke, Jack Tucker of Naples in diving and Matthew Verwest of Riverdale in the 100 freestyle

In the girls' meet, the Naples girls beat Cape Coral by 55 team points, thanks mostly to thriving in the freestyle events.

Fina Hickmon won the 200 freestyle, Havana Layton won in the 50 and 100 freestyles, Tarrah Naghib won the 100 backstroke, and Sabyne Brisson won the 100 breaststroke

Naples coach Monet Layton saw the Golden Eagles win their third district title in the last four years.

“The seniors came in as freshmen three years ago, and we hadn’t won a district title in 20 years,” Layton said. “They have totally turned the program around. It was a total team effort. There were a lot of girls who weren’t seeded that were able to win.

The Golden Eagles also won the 200 and 400 freestyle relay events

“Everyone came through. All the first places and seconds really added up,” Layton said. “I want to see everyone’s spirits stay up over the next week. There was cheering today even from those who weren’t swimming. The spirit of everyone as a team made it a total team effort.”

Other event winners included Clarice Spencer of Fort Myers in the 100 butterfly, Melissa Blaine of Cape Coral in the 200 individual medley and the 500 freestyle and Emma Beckman of North Fort Myers in the diving event

Kimble was pleased as the Cape Coral girls managed a strong runner-up finish. “Our girls are sitting in a good spot. We knew it’d be tough to come back and be super-competitive today,” Kimble said. “But they did a great job in coming back – and we had a lot of upperclassmen with personal best times.”

Cross Country

District 1A-6: Someone familiar and someone new told the stories of the boys' and girls' races at the Class 1A-District 6 Championships on the campus of SFCA.

The familiar came in the form of ECS senior Ava Povich who dominated the girls' race. Povich bolted to the front while seven girls ran together for the first mile before Cantebury’s Gabriella Santucci worked her way to the front and laid claim to second.

“I knew that the weather would be really nice today so I wanted to run a good time,” said Povich. Her ultimate goal was her own course record which she nailed by almost a minute, clocking in at 18:38.

Meanwhile, the team battle was shaping up between Community School of Naples and First Baptist Academy with the Seahawks putting six girls ahead of FBA’s fifth for a 13-point margin of victory.

Seahawks head coach Kasye Beza said a summer of good training was the difference maker. “They just want it, they’re really nice kids, they’re really happy kids and they work really hard,” said Beza.

That summer of work showed in the boys' race where a new face continued his fine senior season. Sergei Guzman wasn’t one of CSN’s top seven on last year’s squad.  Saturday the Seahawks senior patiently stalked a pack of five boys and waited until the final quarter mile to open up a comfortable gap for a 10-second victory.

“I was just gonna chill out and save my legs for states and regionals,” said Guzman.

Besides the boys and girls of CSN moving on, the boys of SFCA nearly pulled out a win over Out-of-Door thanks to seniors Hayden Tank and A.J. Duda, both coming back from medical setbacks and injuries.

Area teams moving onto regions besides both CSN squads include FBA’s boys and girls, SFCA’s boys and girls, Donahue Academy boys and girls, Canterbury boys and girls, St. John Neumann’s boys and girls along with the girls from the Village School.

The next test comes in a week at Lakeland’s Holloway Park at the Class 1A-Region 3 Championship.
