Class 2A Swim Meet

Cadence Fort, Estero
Cadence Fort, Estero

Estero’s Cadence Fort made her final high school swim meet memorable. The Florida State signee took second in the 500 free in 4:59.56 and third in the 200 free in 1:52.41 at the Class 2A Swim meet Saturday night in Stuart.

"All things considered, her last meet went well," Estero swim coach Heather Fort said of her daughter Cadence. "She raced to a lifetime best in the 200 free and her highest finish in her high school career in that race. Her 500, she took a risk and went out after it, it didn’t pay off the way she wanted, due to the unexpected training loss (hurricanes) and illness the last week, but she gave it her all and that’s all any of us could ask of our athletes, Cadence included."

Barron Collier’s Carsyn Ide had a strong showing, placing third in the 100 backstroke in 59.05 and seventh in the 100 fly in 57.54. She was also a member of the Barron Collier girls' 200 medley relay of Ella Bradshaw, Emilia Mazzola and Catie Laur that placed fifth in 1:51.79, and the 400 free relay with Laur, Bradshaw, and Rebecca Van’t Hoff that took fifth in 3:41.19.

"She was fantastic," Barron Collier coach Matt Nelson said. "In the backstroke finals, she was the only swimmer who dropped time from prelims, helping her move from a 5th seed up to 3rd. She's a wonderful person as well, as happy for her teammates' successes as her own."

Laur took eighth in the 200 IM in 2:15.31 and ninth in the 100 fly in 58.14 as the Cougars girls placed fifth as a team with 118 points.

Lely’s Caelen Burt was fifth in the 50 free in 23.91 and also took fourth in the 100 free in 51.51.

Bonita Springs’ Annika Stafford placed 10th in the 500 free in 5:16.64.

The Barron Collier boys took 14th with 57 points and Estero was 15th with 54.

Estero senior Patrick Kirby pulled off a surprise. After three years of struggling to make the state meet and get into the B finals, he uncorked a strong night in the 50 free, taking third in a time of 21.52.

"He swam a heck of a 50 free twice today to take the bronze tonight, all while uncontrollably coughing up his lungs to the point it was making him puke every time he raced," Fort said. "He didn’t worry about how bad he felt and got the job done in spectacular fashion. He may not have won a state title, but that’s a champion attitude all should admire."

The Cougars’ Sam Harvey finished eighth in diving with a score of 338.55 and Jonathan Sobczak was also eighth in the 100 fly in 52.40.

Estero’s Keanu Garnier-Chan was 10th in the 100 free in 47.86.

Stephanie Saracione led the Tritons with four goals, while Florida commit Ryleigh Acosta tacked on two goals and two assists in the win.

“We had a really good team effort,” said head coach Jami Hagy. “We’ve been really pushing to keep that intensity throughout the entire game, and the girls rose to the occasion. It’s just exciting.”

The Tritons ball movement looked even better than last year, dominating time-of-possession while scoring three goals in the first 15 minutes of action.

The first Mariner score came early, when Caroline Pelkofski broke the ice at the 3’ mark off a corner kick. Next up was Saracione, who scored just eight minutes later on an assist from Pelkofski. At the 15 minute mark, Gloria Quintanilla put in a header to give the Tritons an early 3-0 lead.

“We’ve been really trying to work on our discipline and our shape as a unit,” Hagy said. “The girls have just been really moving the ball well and being patient, and it showed tonight.”

“It was really good to see us working really well together, especially after everything that’s happened this year,” Acosta said. “I think we work so well together because we’re so close on and off the field.”

It wasn’t long before the Tritons struck in the second half, when Saracione notched her third goal on an assist from Quintanilla ten minutes into the half. It wasn’t until the 55th minute when Mariner scored again, when Saracione struck from just inside the box for her fourth goal of the contest.

“It really boosts my confidence,” said Saracione, who transferred to Mariner after two successful seasons at Ida Baker. “We gel really well and they're super welcoming, so I’m very excited that I got to have this strong game with them and begin a really strong season.”
