Southwest High School in Fort Worth was placed on secure status after off-campus fight
A fight across the street from Southwest High School and two disturbances and a medical emergency on campus prompted administrators to place the Fort Worth school on secure status Wednesday afternoon, police said.
Tracy Carter, public information officer for the Fort Worth Police Department, said officers were dispatched to a fight at a Chevron in the 3800 block of Altamesa Boulevard, near the school, shortly before noon Wednesday. According to Carter, a few students from the school participated in the fight.
A disturbance between students on the football field, a disturbance between students inside the school and a student suffering from a medical emergency happened about the same time as the fight but were unrelated, Carter said. All of the incidents together led to administrators putting the school on secure status, he said.
Claudia Garibay, executive director of external and emergency communications for the Fort Worth Independent School District, said the outside doors were locked and no one was allowed to enter or leave the school, but the school did not go into full lockdown. A full lockdown would involve securing students in their classrooms.
“There was never an active threat on campus,” Garibay said.
Carter said there were rumors about guns being involved, but that is not true.
No arrests have been made so far, he said, but police will continue to investigate.
