Southwood’s Mar’Quarius Johnson tops Week 14 Shreveport Times Athlete of the Week voting
Southwood’s Mar’Quarius Johnson secured enough votes this week to win the Times online poll for Athlete of the Week, sponsored by Raising Cane’s Chicken Fingers and the Shreveport-Bossier Sports Commission.
A standout basketball player for the Cowboys, Johnson is the first Southwood winner of the 2021-22 school year. He joins previous winners that include Catherine Jurkovich (Airline), Mariah Hintze (Ruston) Taylor McCabe (Northwood) and Daly Nagot (Benton).
Johnson and his supporters racked up 34,645 votes, a solid 35% of the 98,556 votes cast in the weekly online recognition. Those numbers allowed Johnson to top a field of nine additional candidates, including second-place Yoni Flores, a Northwood soccer player, who made a strong run for the recognition with 30,602 votes (31%).

Johnson will receive a backpack, a boxed lunch combo and some additional swag courtesy of Raising Cane’s.
Through just four games this season, Johnson is averaging 15.4 points, four rebounds and four assists per game.
“I am truly proud of this young man and the leader he has become,” Southwood coach Brandon Gultery said. “I’ve had the pleasure of coaching Mar’Quarius for two years at Southwood and the growth in his production here has been a true success story of his hard work. He is very deserving of this accomplishment and our program is truly happy for him.”
Others on the 14th ballot of the school year were DeKaveon Taylor, Huntington basketball; Olivia Sepulvado, Zwolle basketball; Jamari Markray, Doyline basketball; Nadia Onsarigo, Captain Shreve soccer; Jorge Tinoco, Airline soccer; Collin Bell, North DeSoto wrestling; Michael Gilreath, Evangel wrestling; Natalie Davis, Haughton wrestling and Peyton Welch, Parkway cheer.
They were chosen because of their performance the previous week or because their names were submitted by their coach. The Times poll is posted each Monday at shreveporttimes.com with a new slate of student-athletes in high school sports other than football.
The Times online only poll runs through Thursday midnight. The poll includes northwest Louisiana athletes competing in volleyball, cross country, swimming, cheerleading, basketball, soccer, wrestling, powerlifting, indoor and outdoor track, baseball, softball, golf, tennis, bowling, gymnastics and fishing while those sports are in season.
