Spain's ex-king Juan Carlos in UAE

The mystery of the whereabouts of a scandal-hit former Spanish king is solved...

Spain's former monarch Juan Carlos has been in the United Arab Emirates since August 3, a royal spokesperson confirmed Monday (August 17).

The 82 year-old said earlier this month he would leave Spain after controversial aspects of his past private life came to light....but he did not say where he was going.

Spanish media had reported he was in Abu Dhabi, while other reports suggested he might be in Portugal or the Dominican Republic.

The once-popular king abdicated in favor of his son Felipe in 2014 after a tax fraud case involving members of the royal family.

Juan Carlos also caused anger with an ill-judged elephant hunting trip at a time when Spaniards were struggling through a deep recession.

Though he stepped back from public life, the controversy continued.

In June, Spain's Supreme Court opened a preliminary investigation into his involvement in a high-speed rail contract built by Spanish firms in Saudi Arabia.

A Swiss newspaper reported Juan Carlos received $100 million from the late Saudi king.

The former monarch is not formally under investigation, and he has declined to comment on the matter.
