Spain's Valencia burns nurse effigy at fallas festival
The five-day festival which, traditionally held in March, was cancelled last year as the COVID-19 pandemic struck Spain.
The start of this year's event was postponed until September due to health restrictions earlier this year, Compulsory mask wearing was still in effect for the festivities, along with a 01:00 a.m. curfew.
On the last day of the festival, intricate giant "ninots," the Valencian name for paper mache dolls, are brought out onto the streets and burned as part of a tradition that honours Saint Joseph, the patron saint of the carpenters.
The festival is believed to have originated from pagan rituals that marked the end of the boreal winter.
In 2016, UNESCO recognized "Las Fallas" as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
