Sparta woman killed, township man seriously injured in head-on collision on Route 181

A 41-year-old Sparta woman was killed and a township man was seriously injured in a head-on collision Sunday evening on Route 181, police said.

Erin Moore was driving a blue Hyundai Tucson south on Route 181, also knowns as Woodport Road, near Signal Hill Trail around 5:30 p.m. when a gray BMW 540i sedan driven by a 41-year-old man crossed over the southbound lane and struck her vehicle, according to Sparta Police Lt. John Lamon.

Sparta Fire Department first responders used the Jaws of Life to extract Moore from her vehicle and she was taken to Newton Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead, police said. The other driver was taken to Morristown Medical Center via medevac and rushed to emergency surgery for head and back injuries. His condition was not known as of Monday afternoon, Lamon said.

The cause of the crash is under investigation by the Sparta Detective Bureau and the Sussex County Prosecutor's Office.
